Every time I’m in the vicinity of this café, I make sure I go up to their glass display case and see what baked goods are on sale. Usually, I pick up a loaf of their homemade bread which is really soft and a tad healthier than the loaves we find on supermarket shelves. Bakeroni is one place that those living in and around Taman Desa regard as part of home. It’s been here for at least 15 years and has been run by the same lady owner since the beginning.
I’ve sat down for lunch here several times. They open for breakfast, lunch and tea but close by 4pm. When I came here for lunch, I got to see how the café bred a sense of familiarity and belonging. More than half of all the customers who came in knew the lady boss and chatted with her like old friends. The younger ones even regarded her almost like a mother figure, and let her recommend menu items. She even knew some of the regular’s favourites.
Of course, you don’t have to be a long time customer to enjoy yourself at Bakeroni. There’s an affordable lunch set for RM29.90 available which includes one appetizer, one main, one dessert and a drink. If you forego the dessert, you can have the set for only RM25.90.
I chose to go with the lunch set and had a Huzeran potato salad for starters and a Japanese hamburger for the main meal. The salad was really refreshing and light, and I was pleasantly surprised by the texture of the hamburger.
It was so soft, almost melting in my mouth. Although it was made of minced beef, the meat was well marinated and cooked so that none of that ‘beefy’ earthy smell was left. The hamburger was served with rice and a sunny side up egg which paired beautifully.
This was all finished off with a Pandan Panna Cotta for dessert. The pudding was light and creamy, and the crushed nuts on the top balanced out the soft texture perfectly. I was feeling a tad bit more peckish,
so I also ordered an egg, cheese and turkey slice toasted sandwich. The eggs paired really well with the crusty bread. I ended up not being able to finish the sandwich so I had it packed away.
Bakeroni’s full menu is filled with food items that are hearty but affordable. Apart from the Japanese hamburger I had, they also offer Quesadillas, Pasta and a homemade western style burger. For those who prefer more Asian meals, there’s also Rendang Beef, Chicken Karaage or General Tso’s chicken served with rice.
Another thing I love about this place is how the western food here is rather affordable. Sandwiches, pasta, pies, noodles and rice sets can all be found for around RM10 to RM19. Some menu items like toasted sandwiches, soups, desserts and plain croissants can all be had for less than RM10 each.
Two people can easily have a filling meal here for between RM 35 to RM40. Plus the staff and the owner will make you feel like you’re part of the local community.
