Open Crack at Crackhouse Comedy

Is the smoking ban taking a toll on your social life? Did you choke on your Teh Ais when you saw the Raj Banana Leaf video? Do you wish you could tell all the racist people in the country to get lost? Or do you do a mean impression of Siti Kasim? Open Crack! open-mic night could be for you. Participants are given 3 minutes of stage-time and absolutely anyone can participate!

Alice in the Antipathies at DPAC

(September 26-29)

Masakini Theatre Company & Jute Theatre Company present Alice in the Antipathies, written by Sasi Victoire. Asha the only daughter in a Malyali family leaves Malaysia to become an artist in Australia. This average looking girl -according to her mother- finds a foreign husband and breaks more traditional rules than permissable. She comes up against her mother's expectations of a good Asian girl. Her longing for her mother to shower her with love and affection is unfulfilled. Instead she is well fed-that is the extent of her mother's show of love. Can Asha find the love she so misses in her mother away from Malaysia?

Travel Trouble at TJF
Culture shocked? Language barrier problems? Or just plain lost in an unfamiliar place? We’ve all been there.. and these comics will share with you their funniest stories about travelling and being a foreigner. Featuring Yuichiro Kinjo from Japan, Fathimath Nuha from the Maldives, Michael Saddi from the Philippines, Mad Sabah from Borneo, and hosted by frequent jetsetter Sulaiman Azmil, you’re in for a fun time.

Crackhouse presents Nik Coppin

(September 27-28)

Globe-trotting comedian Nik Coppin is returning to the Crackhouse with his irresistible charm and rapid fire comedy. A stand-up comic for more than 10 years, Nik Coppin has performed all over the world. As well as a regular on the UK comedy circuit and performing in many European countries such as France, Germany, Spain, Austria, Denmark and Hungary, he has also performed many solo shows at The Edinburgh and Adelaide Fringe Festivals, New Zealand and Melbourne International Comedy Festivals, all over Australia and The Inaugural Hollywood Fringe Festival in Los Angeles. His confident, affable and energetic style of comedy is quick to build audience rapport, as he talks about subjects as wide-ranging as observations on human nature, his experiences in The Antipodes, Europe and Asia, his extensive knowledge of wildlife, current affairs and his mixed race up bringing in London. His mother is English and his father is from Barbados. As well as becoming one of the most professional acts on the comedy circuit, his versatility has also made him a much sought after compere. He has the ability to adapt to a multitude of audiences and is skilful, observant and affable enough put them immediately at ease.

Keren Bala Devan at TJF

Keren Bala Devan will be headlining The Joke Factory for the first time. A regular in the Malaysian standup comedy circuit and a frequent performer at The Joke Factory, Keren will finally bring you a full hour of his best material, straight up, unfiltered, and unadulterated. Honing his skills on the mic since 2012, Keren Bala Devan has made a name for himself in the local scene with his hilariously vicious takedowns of popular culture, tradition, and socially accepted behaviour. This reputation for incisive and insightful commentary on stage has rightfully earned him the nickname “Cultural Assassin” of Malaysian comedy. His talent and experience has gotten him several televised appearances including on Comedy Central Asia and iflix’s Oi! Jaga Mulut. He’s also an accomplished writer having published articles in Esquire Malaysia as well as producing his own podcast with Netflix’s Kavin Jay.
