FEBRUARY 1:  Christian and The Groove Theory at NBT

Starting his musical career at the tender age of 17, Christian Theseira experimented with various genres of music until finally settling on the R&B and Soul. Born and bred on the streets of Kuala Lumpur, he embodies Malaysian music, art and culture. His art is a reflection of the various experiences he has encountered throughout his growth as an artist and has shared the stage with local and international legends like Usher, DNCE, Yuna and Jaclyn Victor.

FEBRUARY 1: Lolipop Party at the Bee

Lolipop Party is an entertainment event that brings together the nation's hip-hop and its central purpose is to give a platform to up-and-coming artists. Lolipop Party is a 1-day music event that will be held in The Bee, Publika starting at 2pm and is targeting to be the largest Hip-Hop festival in Malaysia soon. In the spirit of "talents worth spreading," Tuneup Kl has created Lolipop Party, a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to explore the industry of music through experience and platform for the new line of influential headliners and energetic newcomers. With Hip Hop currently dominating the music scene, the Lolipop Party with all local line up is bound to be a major turn up.

FEBRUARY 1/2: The Frankie Sixes at Alexis

The Frankie Sixes is a new swing jazz band with some familiar faces from the Malaysian music scene. The band, a side project of singer-songwriter Reza Salleh, started out playing for lindy hop dancers, a kind of swing dance from the 1940-50s. Playing together with Reza this weekend is Ee Jeng on keys, Che Wan on double bass and KJ on drums. Expect to hear the likes of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and a lil’ bit of Nat “King” Cole thrown in for good measure. Be prepared to move your feet!

Loco The boys will intimately perform all the songs in the EP, and share interesting stories in their musical journey. Interesting, ought-to-deserve-your-attention pop punk bands Pasca Sini, Wickweaky, and Panasejook will be opening the showcase.bois from Wilayah Tong Sampah – Hacktick! –  with their first self-organized gig ever – Another Loser Showcase. FEBRUARY 3: Billie Blue & The Nowhere Men at NBT

Inspired by bands like Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin and Jefferson Airplane, Billie Blue & The Nowhere Man is an alternative rock outfit with a vintage sound echoing the sensibilities of folk rock and acid rock of the 60s and 70s. The band delivers driving rhythms, colourful melodic lines, and assured yet sensitive vocals with distinctive vibrato. In combination with dynamic guitar riffs and steadily nuanced bass and drums, Billie Blue & The Nowhere Man’s musical approach is decidedly introspective, bohemian and hard to ignore.

FEBRUARY 4: New Village Music Lab ft. Kirana Kay & Lea Ismail

Formed in 2016 by pianist Tengku Indra, New Village Music Lab takes inspiration from Postmodern Jukebox to bring their own twist to evergreen songs with the aim to boost people’s interest in classic and modern jazz. Initially starting as a three-piece band, Tengku Indra got the idea to pull in more members in July 2016. NVML collaborates with local artists as a way of creating a platform for new faces to showcase their talent.

 

 

 

Founder of Kirana Kay & Her Associates, a KL based quartet playing traditional and contemporary jazz with a fusion of Latin varieties. She’s a vocalist that performs authentic R&B, Soul, Pop Rock and Traditional Malay and is a regular feature here at No Black Tie.

Lea Ismail is one of Malaysia’s upcoming home-grown artists. She’s a petite 26-year-old who discovered her voice by busking on the streets before her record producer came across her. Ismail was then approached by Melakaboy, a music composer and producer who was interested in producing her first single, “Langkah Baru”.
