APRIL 10: The Frankie Sixes Live at NBT

The Frankie Sixes is a swing jazz side project of AIM award-winning singer-songwriter, Reza Salleh. His debut album Realise topped radio charts the year of its release and has led him to perform around the globe, such as Australia, Korea, Thailand and Japan to name a few. The band consists of Ee Jeng on keys, one of the most well known jazz musicians in the local jazz scene and is seen normally leading Ee Jeng Trio or Funkatorie.

On double bass is Che Wan, who has played for some of the top jazz practitioners in the Malaysian music industry, such as Michael Veerapen and Junji Delfino. Outside of jazz he’s sessions for the likes of Yuna, Tony Eusoff and Guba. On drums is KJ, who trained musically at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California.

APRIL 11: Rachel Guerzo Quartet ft Louis Soliano

Rachel Guerzo is a renowned Malaysian Jazz singer with rich and sultry vocals, and a fluid pianist. She learned to play the piano from her late grandfather and pioneer musician, Alfonso Soliano, whom she credits as a major influence in her music career. Soliano was dubbed Malaysia’s father of Jazz and formed RTM Orchestra, the first Malaysian orchestra which composed a slew of hits.  

 

 

Joining Rachel Guerzo is veteran dummer, Louis Soliano, who played drums and percussion with the South Burnett Community (SBC) Orchestra for 10 years and was a regular feature at the Singapore International Jazz Festival in the 80s. In 1997, he was a receipt of the Compass Artistic Excellence Award for his outstanding musicianship. In 2013, Louis was awarded the Fellowship Diploma of the London College of Music (FLCM) for his percussion performance from the University of West London. He also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the then Minister of Culture, Community & Youth, Mr. Lawrance Wong, at the inaugural Singapore International Jazz Festival in 2014.

APRIL 11-13: Bobo KL presents It’s Tarakucha Time

Lead vocalists Sean Ghazi and Ida Mariana reunite with musical director Nish Tham and their 12 piece Terrer-Menerrer Big Band on Bobo home turf for three evenings of Tarakucha favourites. Genre: Malay classics given the big band treatment, with other songs in multiple languages…presented in English.

The Poolside Open Mic is Open Mic Malaysia’s 3rd longest running open mic night which happens every Thursday evening right on top of The KL Journal! Each installation features one of their finest musicians, with this one featuring Oyent.

 

 

‘VIMA’ Male Vocalist of The Year 2018 award winner OYENT is a Malaysian independent singer-songwriter and cover artiste. Armed with his strong stage presence and exceptional fluency with English, Malay, Tagalog and Spanish hits, Oyent promises an entertaining set with a diverse repertoire. He is a graduate of the National Arts Academy (ASWARA) and is now performing with the celebrated ‘Kuala Lumpur Orchestra’ as a Vocalist. Oyent has released two Spanish-Malay singles Vida (Tanda Kasih) and IBU and is currently working on several music projects and collaborations with local artistes. Apart from music, OYENT is also passionate about and preaches a healthy ‘drug-free’ lifestyle, with the firm belief that ‘Music is Its Own High’.

APRIL 12/13:  Alemay Fernandez at NBT

The late Nancy Wilson was a Grammy-winning influential Jazz singer whose polished vocals made her a platinum artist and top concert performer. She resisted being identified with a single category, especially jazz, and referred to herself as a “song stylist”. Influenced by Dinah Washington, Nat King Cole and other stars, Wilson covered everything from jazz standards, and in the 1960s alone released 8 albums that reached the Top 20 on Billboard’s pop charts.

 

 

Singaporean vocalist Alemay Fernandez is a veteran performer in the Asian Jazz scene. In her illustrious 20-year career, she has performed with the likes of David Foster, Gregory Porter & Antonio Hart, plus many more, and has sung for A-listers like Kevin Spacey and Serena Williams as well as Presidents & Prime Ministers. Alemay is known for her sultry tone, powerhouse vocals and an onstage presence that keeps the audience eating out of the palm of her hand. She is the Jazz Ambassador at the Red Dot Workshop Series.

Performing with Alemay for the evening is established Jazz pianist, producer, record studio head & mentor, Michael Veerapen, along with talented saxophonist and flautist, Julian Chan, who graduated with a Masters degree in Jazz Performance from The Aaron Copland School of Music in New York.

Galuh Kusuma from Geelanagig is a singer-songwriter from Indonesia with a post rock dream rock sound.

APRIL 14: Al Terry & The Purple Haze at NBT

Al Terry is an Australian blues frontman whose soulful vocals and harmonica instrumentals are delivered in the amplified harp tone of Chicago blues masters such as Big Walter Horton and Little Walter. He incorporates swinging West Coast Jump Blues and Rock & Roll into a night of high-energy, toe tapping up-tempo music; punctuated by some low-down, speak-easy Blues.

 

 

The Purple Haze Blues band is made up of Malaysian Blues legends from Blues Gang: ZZi Blues on Lead Guitar and Shaik Karim on Drums; they are joined by the solid talent of Shah Shariff on bass. The Purple Haze Blues Band has been rocking live venues throughout Malaysia for 20 years.

Al’s collaboration with Purple Haze stretches back 15 years. They’ll be performing songs from their recently released album, combining influences such as Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, James Cotton, Kim Wilson, Charlie Musslewhite, Joe Filisko, James Harmon, Jay Geils Band, Big Joe Turner, as well as some of Al Terry’s own Blues.
