JUNE 13: Michael Veerapen Trio ft Julian Chan

Michael Veerapen is an established Jazz pianist, producer, record studio head and mentor who launched his career even before graduating from the prestigious Berklee College of Music with Summa Cum Laude in 1982, making a name for himself in the industry. At 2017 SEA Games grand opening ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur, Michael was the music director, composer and orchestrator, which was broadcasted live to all major ASEAN countries.

 

 



Julian Chan is a freelance saxophonist/flutist based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Julian has been involved in a large variety of projects, ranging from club shows, concerts, festivals, album and commercial recordings, music tours, as well as theatre. He has made recordings for many albums locally and internationally. He has also established himself well as a prominent saxophonist in the Malaysian music scene, whether as a sideman, bandleader and as an educator. He is currently an active member of one of Malaysia’s most sought-after jazz outfit, WVC Malaysian Jazz Ensemble.

JUNE 13-15: Bobo KL presents Sean Ghazi

Following one sold out night in February earlier this year, Sean Ghazi returns with Nish on the Bobo Grand and Lu Ee on the violin with a program of musical highlights from the stage and beyond. Presented in English, Broadway and crooner classics sung in multiple languages.

JUNE 13: Poolside Open Mic #93 ft Andy Ngew

Andy Ngew, a Malaysia guitarist who has been actively performing in and outside Malaysia. Heavily influenced by the thumb picking styles of Tommy Emmanuel and Chet Atkins, he uses Thumb Picking styles in his original and cover tunes. He started off playing the classical guitar for 7 years before venturing into finger-style guitar. He also performed as an electric guitarist in his band in Malaysia.

 

 

He performed as an opening concert artist for Tommy Emmanuel and Adam Rafferty in 2012. He performed in the Shanghai International Finger-Style Guitar Festival in 2013 and 2014. He have also performed in the Vietnam International Finger-Style Guitar Festival in 2015 and. In 2016, He toured and shared the same stage with Andy Mckee, Masa Sumide, and Masaaki Kishibe in the Malaysian International Finger-Style Festvial. JUNE 14/15: Karen Nunis & The Blue Notes: Soul Connection

The music Karen Nunis Blackstone writes and sings fuses the idioms of blues and jazz, blending souful world music overtones. She is a singer as well as songwriter and fine artist, now back in Malaysia after many years in Japan, Singapore, and the USA, where she sang with various collaborative efforts and exhibited her artwork. Whilst playing in Japan, Singapore and USA, she formed her own bands - The Cadillacs, Black and Blue, The Blackstone Blues Band, and Karen Nunis and The Space Cadets. She has also collaborated with many talented musicians for live performances and recordings including poet Keith Tume (US), singer-songwriter Jesse Phillip (US), John Schwab of McGuffey Lane (US), Small Town Stars (Japan), Lewis Pragasam and Asia Beat (KL), Julian Mokhtar (KL), among others.

JUNE 15/16: MPO plays Mahler and Mendelssohn (with Grace Clifford violinist)

British conductor Mark Wigglesworth conducts the Malaysian Philarmonic Orchestra performing Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1. Also in the programme, violinist Grace Clifford makes her DFP debut, performing the enduringly popular Mendelssohn concerto.

JUNE 18:  Rachel Guerzo Trio at NBT

Rachel Guerzo is a renowned Malaysian Jazz singer and a fluid pianist. She learned to play the piano from her late grandfather and pioneer musician, Alfonso Soliano, whom she credits as a major influence in her music career. Soliano was dubbed Malaysia's father of Jazz and formed RTM Orchestra, the first Malaysian orchestra which composed a slew of hits.
