NVML ft. Kirana Kay, Lea Ismail & Tengku Hadhira at NBT

Formed in 2016 by pianist Tengku Indra, New Village Music Lab takes inspiration from Postmodern Jukebox to bring their own twist to evergreen songs with the aim to boost people’s interest in classic and modern jazz. Initially starting as a three-piece band, Tengku Indra got the idea to pull in more members in July 2016. NVML collaborates with local artists as a way of creating a platform for new faces to showcase their talent.

Founder of Kirana Kay & Her Associates, a KL based quartet playing traditional and contemporary jazz with a fusion of Latin varieties. She’s a vocalist that performs authentic R&B, Soul, Pop Rock and Traditional Malay and is a regular feature at No Black Tie.

Lea Ismail is one of Malaysia’s upcoming home-grown artists. She’s a petite 26-year-old who discovered her voice by busking on the streets before her record producer came across her. Ismail was then approached by Melakaboy, a music composer and producer who was interested in producing her first single, Langkah Baru.

Rachel Guerzo Trio at NBT

Back for her first show of the month at No Black Tie, Rachel Guerzo is a renowned Malaysian Jazz singer and a fluid pianist. She learned to play the piano from her late grandfather and pioneer musician, Alfonso Soliano, whom she credits as a major influence in her music career. Soliano was dubbed Malaysia's father of Jazz and formed RTM Orchestra, the first Malaysian orchestra which composed a slew of hits.

KL Journal Open Mic #108 ft  Dowandofla

Dowandofla is an Ampang born and based rapper-songwriter. Transcribing experiences from his own life and the lives of the people around him into his lyrics, he blends his own personal tongue-in-cheek rapping chops with the styles of his greatest influences Russel, Manilla Grey, Sik-K and Cjamm to produce songs which are truly his own. His debut single “My Whip” was released in 2017 under the record label 40k and it received great applause from the local scene. He has since released 7 genre-bending singles, namely Cuba-Cuba, Santai Sabtu, Sunday Blues, Say My Name, Idowan and Gila Kapas, all of which are instantly recognisable as Dowandofla tunes.

Pisco Bar presents Kaya Live

The boys are back for the third month in a row cos we love them that much. Kaya started out as a jam. A couple of jam sessions, to be exact. Inspired by genres like rock and roll, blues and reggae, you’ll hear a bit of Chuck Berry, The Beatles and Bob Marley in their music, mixed with a local touch that has brought the band to perform on the stages of local music festivals and venues such as Pisco Bar, Ril’s, China House and Iron Fairies KL.

Michael Veerapen Trio with special guests at NBT

With Jakob Dinesen, who, 2003 and 2007,  received Grammy’s for Best Jazz Release and in 2009 for Best World Release. He will be joined by accomplished Jazz pianist, producer, record studio head and mentor, Michael Veerapen for the evening. Launching his career before even graduating from the prestigious Berklee College of Music with Summa Cum Laude in 1982, Michael was the music director, composer and orchestrator for the 2017 SEA Games grand opening ceremony. Also featuring, Nadia Fauzi (voice), Leon Yuen (harmonica), Nazrin Muhammad (guitar), Daniel Foong (bass), Foo Yin Hong (bass).

The Bee presents Paperplane Pursuit Final Flight Concert

Paperplane Pursuit returns to the stage one last time for their farewell concert, Final Flight on 28th September 2019 at 7 pm scheduled to take off at The Bee, Publika. #

As the band will be retiring in September 2019, they just released their final album titled “Final Flight” which includes two new singles; ‘DanceMan’ and ‘My Friends’. The songs are a parting gift to their fans and everyone who has helped get the band to where they are today

Paperplane Pursuit created waves in the industry when they made into the US Billboard Charts in 2015 with their hit ‘Feel Good’. Their farewell concert will take the audience on a trip down memory lane. The show will also feature two opening acts, Talitha and Lost Spaces.

OTAM is a singer-songwriter born and raised in the heart of Petaling Jaya. Playing mostly original compositions, his style is sorta funk-folk, feel-good, whatever-floats-his-boat-at-that-moment-in-time. Besides donning his classical guitar whenever he can, he is also an active member of FTP, a small support unit for local singer-songwriters.
