MARCH 28/29: Rio Sidik with the John Thomas Trio at NBT
Born and raised by a family of Trumpeters, Rio Sidik has been playing the trumpet since he was 8 years old. Amongst his family, he is the third generation to play the trumpet, and his grandfather Daryono has played with legendary Jazz musicians, such as Bubi Chen and Maryono. Rio Sidik got his big break when Bubi Chen asked Rio to perform with him at the age of 13.
The Surabaya born musician has been highly recognised nationally and internationally by his extraordinary trumpet skills and one of a kind voice. Rio Sidik has no intention of categorising his music, when asked about his album The Sound Of Mystical Vibe, he mentioned that it is a form of energy and process of his life and musical career.
To join the Surabayan trumpeter for the evening is John Ashley Thomas, renowned Malaysian dummer who has toured the Blue Note circuit in Japan with Motown Legends, worked alongside Grammy-winning flautist, Nestor Torres and has played at numerous jazz festivals around the world.

Legendary and well-respected guitarist Julian Mokhtar has become a household name in the Southeast Asian music scene. Julian has opened for Ian Gillan from Deep Purple and has played blues guitar with guitar extraordinaire, Buddy Guy. The man can swing it low with reggae, get roots with blue grass and just about everything in between. In 2000, he released a self-produced and recorded solo album titled About Time. Mokhtar has appeared as a session player on albums by Amir Yussof and Karen Nunis Blackstone, with whom he also played a number of gigs with in Japan.
