NOVEMBER 3

Taboo at Elysium

The 10th edition of Taboo comes with an A grade line up of seasoned selectors. From funky grooves to garage to basslines to breaks to house of the rarest variety to liquid, this edition has it all and it features regulars No Requests (Toolroom Records, Zulu, UK), Ken DMA (UK) with a more leftfield approach and two KL music veterans – Da Funkie Junkie makes his Taboo debut , joining us for the very first time and Leonard Sinclair, returning to the Elysium box – this time at Taboo.

Donovan aka Da Funkie Junkie is a purist. Having gained his two decades plus of inspiration from the spirit and music of David Mancuso's Loft and Larry Levan's Paradise Garage, he is a pivotal character to Malaysia's electronic music. One of the most esteemed DJs and promoters of the first wave of non-mainstream music in the country, he has booked and played alongside world's most relevant artistes. A master on vinyl, he was one of the last to give up the traditional ways to newer technology. However, his heart was left somewhere in a crate of rare groove records.

Have you ever heard a DJ mixing breakbeat and then the next thing you know he is playing a trance anthem ? If you haven't, then enter Leonard Sinclair. Another established presence in Malaysia's music scene, Leo is characterised by an amazing taste in music and undoubted versatility. Top that up with the energy of No Request's set and his ability to startle a dancefloor into submission in mere minutes and Ken DMA's charisma and crowd pleasing abilities behind the decks and you get a taste of the Taboo experience.

Terence C and Victor G Live @ Privie

Epic sounds from two progressive veterans of the Kuala Lumpur nightlife scene who pair up once again for a special appearance at Privi. Both DJs have been in the Malaysian (and regional) scene since the turn of the millennium, and have carved their way through many of the most popular clubs and parties that have graced the Malaysian scene, and by admission, both share similar progressive electronic music tastes.

Through those years, Terence C’s been resident at some of the most iconic of Malaysian clubs in our scene, including Echo Jazz Bar, Movement KL, The Backroom and Zouk KL. And since 2012, he’s also been a regular fixture in the Beijing and Shanghai scene.

Victor G’s been seen DJing at the likes of White Room, Euphoria by Ministry of Sound, and more recently Rootz, Nagaba KL and Twenty-One Kitchen & Bar, and of course currently at Elysium Bar & Terrace, Le Noir KL and Kyo KL.

Techno whiz, house head and influential tastemaker are well-deserved titles Victor G has rightfully earned in his electronic dance music career with a thriving run spanning close to two decades in the local and regional scene scene.

From turning the wheels of steel at Bangsar’s infamous The White Room in 1999 to spinning his way to the trendiest spots today, Victor G proves time and time again why he is still one of the most sought after DJ’s in the country. His method of madness is simple; keeping true to his savvy style consistently.

His growing talent didn’t go unnoticed as the aspiring DJ earned several accolades back in the early 2000s. In 2003, he bagged the top spot at the Heineken Juice Magazine DJ Quest competition. His winning streak continued with another trophy at the 2004 Vestax Extravaganza DJ competition mixing category, the Pioneer Digital DJ Battle 2004 and 2005 championship and the Pioneer Digital DJ Battle Asian championship 2006.

After years of slaving over the decks all over the city, Victor G hit his career peak with a residency at Euphoria by Ministry of Sound in Sunway. While the club’s role in our scene was short lived, the evolving DJ moved on to bigger and better gigs scoring bookings from across the shore including Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Australia.

His versatility on the decks makes him a firm favourite when it comes to serving tasty appetisers to international heroes like Claude von Stroke, Hot Since 82 and Joris Voorn to name a few. Victor G has also shared the decks with legends like Underworld at the F1 Fuel Concert in Singapore F1 and Basement Jaxx’s debut in Kuala Lumpur. His festival friendly vibes has also landed him spots at Bali’s Soundrise Festival, Future Music Festival Asia and It’s The Ship.

While entertaining is an obvious goal, educating the audience is an element that he cannot dismiss. Victor G continues to school his audience at various spots around town spewing out tantalising techno at underground events, dishing out hot house tunes at the trendiest night spots and experimenting with his version of chilled out vibes that blend soul and funk while keeping his signature groove intact.

Pisco Bar KL presents Shazz

Shazz is pretty much one of KL’s long standing house stalwarts with a career stretching back well over 20 years. Harking back to the styles of Levan and Humphries, the spirit of Shazz`s sets still stay true to house music`s original ideals of wild musical eclecticism and stirring rhythmic intensity that elicit a soulful, spiritual and inspirational vibe.

Growing up in New York City meant music figured heavily in Shazz`s childhood. Listening to influential radio stations such as KISS-FM and WBLS-FM established a diverse frame of musical reference. In 1994 he discovered the nascent underground house scene in Kuala Lumpur, providing a launch pad for his DJing and igniting his passion for garage and deep house. But it was in 1999 in Nottingham, when he met his mentor and DJing partner, Dean Anderson that Shazz`s style was shaped into what it is today.

In addition to their weekly spot at Drop The Bomb @ The Bomb, Shazz and Dean partnered in a number of other residencies, including monthlies at The Edge, Love 2 Be @ The Mint, and Tyrant (with Craig Richards and Lee Burridge). Their numerous guest stints include DIY`s Floppy Disco, Colours @ The Tunnel (Glasgow), Back 2 Basics (Leeds) and Life (Boston, US).

Shazz`s solo guest appearances include Lovezoo @ The Lost Weekend, Progress (Derby), The Que Club (Birmingham) and The Sub Club (Glasgow).

In KL, his appearances have included guest spots at Carbon and Emporium, as well as a residency at House Beautiful @ Liquid, a monthly event offering alternative fare for local clubbers, which he also co-promoted with local house legend the Groovedoctor.

Post 2000 (2004), together with the likes of Terence C, Fono and more, he was co-founding resident DJ at the vaunted Zouk Kuala Lumpur, where he promoted the ‘soulful and spiritual worldwide dance music’ he is so passionate about through his residency at the club’s renowned Velvet Underground and more recently Apex Lounge, until early this year, when he went independent. In recent months, Pisco has been something of a return for Shazz, along with spot appearances at the likes of The Sweatbox at Elysium and more.

Eugene and Bryan Burger at Le Noir KL

Le Noir KL presents Eugene and Bryan Burger on the Roof Terrace. Another one of Malaysia’s pioneers of the electronic dance music scene, Eugene's passion for dance and electronica music was borne in London, whilst studying Fine Art at the Central St Martins School of Art & Design.  It was during this period that Eugene developed his turntable skills, after being exposed to the numerous underground sounds of dub, speed garage, hardcore house, techno and drum’n’bass in a variety of locations in and around London.

Having resided in London for over eight years from 1989 - 1997, Eugene was fortunate enough to experience the growth and fracturing of the UK dance scene first hand.  With the initial birth of the pirate radio stations in London and the underground railway parties, right through to the current super clubs and one-off events, it was clear that Eugene was captivated by the whole concept of the dance and club culture.  It was not long before artists such as The Orb, Mr.C, Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Grooverider, Sasha, LTJ Bukem and Andy Weatherall became major influences for Eugene's musical palette.

Returning to Malaysia with a Bachelor of Arts degree, Eugene formed Tempo Events with like-minded and top local DJ's who felt the need to create a dance scene right here in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  He has since been committed to contributing his efforts as a DJ, promoter and event organiser with Tempo, showcasing cutting-edge DJ's, artists and events.

In June 2002, Tempo created a Malaysian dance brand, Regenerate, which ran for five years. This series has proved to be a tremendous hit, attracting thousands of loyal followers.  Not only was Regenerate a showcase for local and International artistes, It served as a platform that supported up-&-coming DJ's to gain recognition.

Eugene was one of those instrumental in making KL something of a clubbing capital with the constant organising of numerous pioneering warehouse and outdoor parties, including the creation and conceptualization of the legendary Movement KL and Carbon Club at the beginning of this millennium.

As a DJ, his mixing style is smooth and seamless, often riding the line between funky electro and tech-house and quality deep house, and, back in the day, drum’n’bass as well.

Fast forward to today, Eugene is now a fashion designer/DJ who is coming back with a new sound that focuses on deep melodic house or dirty tech-house to techno depending on the venue.

DJ Bryan Burger Kuala Lumpur

Bryan Burger himself was formerly part of Tempo back in the day and is no stranger to the pioneering group of DJs of the past two decades. Burger’s eclectic style cannot be pin pointed into a specific genre as his has built a personality that solely belongs to his own. Deep grooves that trembles within one’s heartbeat, infused with a funky electro baseline, and a prominent hint of a tribal touch which soars through the soul. Burger creates beats that pulsates through and reaches into a heightened frenzy of rapture. He’s also co-funder of Excessive Records and the Royale DJ Academy in Kuala Lumpur.

In the Club Lounge DJ Nesh and friends bring you hip hop, R&B and down on the ground floor DJ K (Open Format) plays the bar in between live band sets and to the close.

Kyo Saturday sounds

DJ Ed Dix Kuala Lumpur

REN: Ed Dix and Moreno. Ed Dix is now at the forefront of KL’s fast growing underground scene. Amidst the titanic dark and underground movement lies a character who sticks out like a sore thumb with his uplifting and distinctive techno sound. The only rule he has is to push the boundaries of conventional electronic music exploring new directions while never losing sight of his core passions – playing music, sharing forward thinking visions and celebrating life.

His sound is defined by his high-octane performances and an unparalleled ability to engage and connect with the crowd and propelled forward by psychedelic beats and rippling synthetic basslines induced by techno, indie dance and hard drive debris like states. Whether it’s his solo or collaborative efforts he has always been a maverick presence in our underground dance culture. Essentially, his intention with his style is to make interesting club music that has emotional resonance.

He is joined by Moreno, Bali-based for the most part and who has played in around the South East Asia region for awhile, including being resident at famed Jakarta club X2, as well as the Living Room, Singapore, amongst many others.

Ronggeng Sound System in the basement

Ronggeng Sound System at Under9KL

Wagwan bassheads. It’s the first Saturday of the month and you know what, Ronggeng Sound System is back in Under9. After their annual Ronggeng Reggae, it is time to get back to their regular programming of pumping heavy bass all night long.

Come this weekend they welcome one of Ronggeng's frequent collaborators back to the booth – Yahna. Spinning/pushing buttons alongside Yahna is DJ-producer Reddi Rocket with pockets full of original productions and exclusive remixes. He will be joined by lyrical badman Nemo, one of the most promising MCs to ever come out of KL's underground scene with verses on fiyah for days. As usual, guests will be supported by residents Nobi and Typo D. This Saturday is also Nobi's quasi-farewell gig as he will board the flight to the land of bratwurst and autobahns.

They’re taking things a little bit different this time as they shift tempos and blending sub-genres throughout the night: from gunfingers-guaranteed junglist anthems and classic grime tunes, all the way to futuristic HudMo-esque beats and fucking banging rap music. Come with an open mind, leave behind the negativity at the door, loosen your limbs and let the vibrations take control – in that particular order. Going back home with a new lover after the gig is optional.

Le Noir KL presents a world exclusive – Noir & Hayze

Denmark's Noir makes his Malaysian debut at Le Noir KL on November 9

Noir, Denmark’s biggest underground export and head honcho of the famed Noir Music Official imprint will be in Kuala Lumpur for the first time together with Malaysian dance floor preacher himself, Hayze under one roof. The duo, responsible for the monstrous hits ‘Around’ and ‘Angel’ will be performing in the Le Noir KL club lounge this November 9 making it a world exclusive and one not to be missed.

One of the planet’s most in demand house DJs and the man behind a hugely successful and pioneering label, Rene ‘Noir’ Kristensen, is also responsible for one of the decade’s biggest house tracks so far, 2011’s global club smash ‘Around’. The track, a sexy, synthesizer-tinted groove featuring Malaysian vocalist/songwriter Hayze, was by far the biggest of Noir’s career to date. It dominated dance floors across the world for nearly 18 months - and didn’t just catapult Noir to the front rank of producers and DJs but Solomun (whose subtle, sexy remix became the definitive version) as well.

Denmark's Noir makes his Malaysian debut at Le Noir KL on November 9

Hayze has been a constant and consistent presence in the dance music underground for almost 20 years. Scene defining and constantly evolving with the times, Hayze’s résumé reads like a who’s who of house music royalty.

Around was one of his biggest releases with production partner Noir from Denmark. The Solomon remix hit more than 35 million views on You Tube and was named ‘Top 50 Dance Tracks of All Time’ by MixMag UK. Tracks like Around, Freak, Changes, Dreams, Thru all received anthem status in the underground world of house music. In 2016, both singles releases Brighter Days and Believer have already reached club anthem status and certainly 2017 has seen him increasing his performance profile even more in his monthly series at Le Noir KL.

ViViD presents Seth Troxler (US) at Kyo KL

Seth Troxler at Club Kyo KL Kuala Lumpur

KYO KL brings you one techno’s most recognisable characters of today with US’s Seth Troxler set to make his Malaysiann debut on November 9 in the Ren Room.

Seth Troxler is one of dance music’s most recognisable characters, the guy with the big hair and the even bigger personality who doesn't take himself, or life, too seriously; a straight-up human being who plays by his own rules. These qualities, along with his passion and seemingly endless knowledge of house and techno, have established him as a figurehead for a new wave of underground electronic music that flies in the face of the disposable idiocy of mainstream EDM.

Through 2017 Seth has been pushing the boundaries with new projects and partnerships, whilst also maintaining his core relationships with the nightclubs that have been integral in moulding him into the DJ he is today: quarterly appearances at Fabric (London), Output (New York) and De School (Amsterdam) along with his usual 10 week residency at Circo Loco (Ibiza) across the summer. His dance floor focused label, Play it Say it, has some dance floor tracks lined up for the year, starting with its first album from the Mekanism; Seth’s “failsafe party starters”.

From the Malaysian side, Alam, Axel Groove along with Kutty & Friz will also feature for the night.
