Alex Martin and Mie at Ren
Malaysia’s Alex Martin has been a fixture in the local and regional scene now for the better part of this new decade. Custodian of deep, rhythmic dance beats and a care-free atmosphere. That’s how Alex describes himself as a DJ, never afraid to go too deep, his emotive musical selections are his own therapy.
Today this translates into sets where he picks apart and infuses together all the pieces of this music that he loves best – beautiful synth work, ethereal backdrops, brooding basslines, and occasional vocal hooks.. all on top of a pronounced foot-shuffling house beat.
“For me, it’s all about emotions and a deep, hypnotic groove… playing racks that get you tapping your feet and nodding your head without you realising it, regardless of genre, tempo style or release date.”
A natural musician, with early self-taught training on bass and guitar, Alex developed a passion for house music in the early 2000s and by 2010 he was playing to big room audiences at Quinte and Desire on Heritage Row, Kuala Lumpur.
As resident and founder of the underground house club, Quinte, along with KL techno-house veteran DJ Kuma, from its conception in 2010 to 2014, Quinte was notably one of the clubs that stuck to a strict underground music policy. And since July, this year, he’s co-founded and co-runs one of the most talked about Pool Parties in the Kuala Lumpur scene in recent years.
He has graced the podium alongside names such as Marco Bailey, Jay Lumen, Mark Farina, Daniel Portman, Marco Loco, Ahmet Sendil, Randy Seidman, Graham Gold, Nakadia and many more.
He is also a frequent guest resident in Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party, Jungle Experience, Sramanora Waterfall Party, Echo Beach and Mellow Mountain Full Moon Night.
DJ Mie has a sophisticated appeal and charisma in putting together the best music and selection in his sets. As early as his first residency in 1993, he has always put a mark of influences on people who come to listen to his musical styles, making him one of the most sought after DJs in the industry. His versatility and efficiency in changing styles makes him a proud owner of his success as a disc jockey.
Based in the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, DJ Mie has been through many terrains in the club circuit gaining more experience and momentum through sheer consistency. He definitely has what it takes to entertain people from all walks of life, be it local and international. Whether he is easing them into a soulful vibe with the chill-out sounds of r&b, or lifting them up with pumping house, he knows how to rock a party.
KYO KL : (Ren Room) Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur, off Jalan Pinang, KLCC, Kuala Lumpur
Admission (with one drink): RM40 before 1am / RM60 after 1am. Free entry before 11pm. For table reservations please contact reservations@clubkyokl.com or 012-921 1730.

Music Is Love at Bait Intermark
Saturdays at Bait Intermark on Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur sees the Da Funkie Junkie curated Music is Love nights with Da Funkie Junkie and Kubika on resident music duties.
The music policy for the night, in terms of vibe and ambience, is to capture the spirit, essence and music integrity of legendary clubs and nights like “Paradise Garage”, “Body & Soul”, “The Loft”, “The Shelter” and “Cielo” in New York; “The Warehouse” and “Music Box” in Chicago, and more contemporary clubs like “Respect Is Burning” and “Secret” in Paris; the early days of “Ministry of Sound” and the funk and cheekiness of “Scaramanga” in London.
According to Da Funkie Junkie, aka Donovan Tho, the focus is to capture and innovate, but not duplicate.
The musical ethos is inspired by legendary DJs Larry Levan and David Mancuso and their modern incarnations, Dimitri from Paris, Joey Negro and Danny Krivit.
The early hours will provide customers with an opportunity to discover the “roots” of dance music i.e. soul, funk, jazz, disco and Afro-latin beats. The latter stages of the night will build towards current and classic deep soulful house, disco house and garage.
As Bait Intermark is a restaurant cum bar and not a full-fledged club, the music will be down-tempo to mid-tempo but uplifting, exuding positive energy. The music will be soulful and organic, classy and elegant.
BAIT INTERMARK : Lot G-19, Grd Flr, Intermark Mall, 348, Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala lumpur
