MPO Chamber Concert - Hauta-aho, Schumann & Beethoven
This evening concert (6.30pm) concert turns the spotlight on one living legend and two from the past: Teppo Hauta-aho, a modern day double bass virtuoso who has penned over 300 works for his instrument, Robert Schumann, the brilliant composer and critic whose final days were marred by a descent into madness, and Ludwig van Beethoven, the man who changed the course of music history with his groundbreaking ideas.
Elements of jazz, contemporary and classical music feature in Hauta-aho's Kadenza, a piece which pushes both musical and technical boundaries for the double bass. Schumann's Adagio and Allegro for cello and piano mirrors the extremes of his multifaceted personality; dreamy and introspective, fiery and passionate. Beethoven's "Judas Maccabaeus" variations give us a glimpse of his fearsome talent as an improviser, while his String Quartet No.15 - written in total deafness just two years before his death - is a hauntingly beautiful work and a pinnacle of the chamber music repertoire.
