Ficelle Boulangerie Taman Desa Review

Ficelle Boulangerie Taman Desa Review

Ficelle is both a bakery and a café that occupies a shaded corner in Taman Desa. It was one of the first of its kind in the area and is recognisable with its French inspired exterior and garden-like setting. From what I hear, the bakery was started by a Japanese expat who brought his knowledge and skills as a Patisserie here.

They’re open from about 8am all the way to 8pm, but if you want to see their full collection of buns, sandwiches and other baked goods, come early before 4pm because their products finish really fast. You can also choose to have breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you’re coming for dinner, the kitchen closes at about 7.00pm – 7.30pm so make sure you reach early to order your food.

The dining area is al fresco and located outside the bakery and payment counter. Usually, everyone goes around taking whatever they want, and they proceed to the cashier to place any more food orders. Food is cooked fresh and warm and will be served from the kitchen straight to your outdoor table.

The buns and bread here are baked fresh from scratch on a daily basis. You can also order pizzas, pastas, rice bowls, Japanese curries and burgers for a main meal.  In the baked goods section, there are Danish pastries filled with vegetables, meats and nuts. I particularly look forward to having their quiche, which includes ham and cheese or salmon and broccoli. Unfortunately, their quiche is often gone by lunchtime so you have to be quick.

One of my favourite sweet pastries here is a nut filled tart, with a pastry shell that just melts in your mouth.  For those who want a lighter meal, there’s a chiller filled with salads and sandwiches.

While I was there, I took a medley of three mini croissants which were all so buttery soft and filled with such lovely crisp lettuce.

Hubby took their vegetable Aglio Olio pasta which wasn’t greasy at all and filled with the earthy tastes of zucchini, bell peppers and broccoli.

I had the Karaage rice bowl, which is Japanese style fried chicken on rice. I expected it to be dry but I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t dry at all. The mayonnaise on the side really lent a burst of flavour to the dish, and there was some light soy sauce based gravy at the bottom.

We also took a slice of carrot cake, and I really loved the number of crunchy nuts in it. There’s a free flow of cool water which you can help yourself to. Apart from that, there’s also hot coffee and tea, as well as juices and sodas too if you want a drink. If you come in the morning before 11am, the breakfast menu is here for you and you can choose from a Big Breakfast and croissant sandwiches.

I’ve been coming to Ficelle for years, and I’m always excited to come back because their menu and baked goods change from time to time. Seasonal favourites and added from time to time to its refreshing to see how dynamic this bakery and café is. I believe this is what keeps customers like me coming back time and again.
