Dying to get out of your house? Looking for an unusual adventure? Then “book” a virtual flight on “The Grand Getaway”, departing from the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur every evening.
The Grand Getaway is an immersive five-course meal that “flies” you across the world, making “stops” at major cities for each different course during the meal.
The Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur has done a fantastic job setting the travel mood, with boarding passes and departure halls - without the stress and crowds of a real airport; and with airplane seats and window views - without the cabin pressure changes!
We don’t want to give away too much of the fun, but The Grand Getaway is an entertaining experience, besides delicious food and drink, that puts some adventure back into our lives.
The Grand Getaway makes “stops” in Tokyo, San Francisco, Moscow and Venice, before “landing” back in KL. With each stop, a fresh course in the meal is served. You are also treated to 360 scenic views of each city while you dine. Good music, games and magic also make the “trip” enjoyable and exciting.
After “boarding” the “MAS Boeing 777”, your first destination is Tokyo. There, they treat you to fresh, plump Japanese scallops atop a bed of delicious pickled wakame, radish and salmon roe salad with shoyu dressing. A great start to the tour. While eating this course, we enjoyed the music and reminisced about our own visit to Tokyo a few years ago, as images of the city appeared on the 360 screens.
Next stop was San Francisco, famous for its steep urban hills, seafood and sourdough bread, among other things. While we “stopped over” in San Francisco, we savoured California Clam Chowder, served in a sourdough bowl. It was creamy with calm essence, and as it dissolved into the inside of the sourdough bowl, extra delicious.
“Visiting” Moscow was an especially fun treat, as we have never been there before. We really enjoyed the 360 images of the city, and the Forest Berry Sorbet, complete with the romantic mist, was a very delicious way to clear the pallet, indulge in icy fruit, and ready ourselves for the next course.
The last foreign city on our “flight” was the Floating City of Venice. Another place we have not yet been to. It was amazing to see the 360 images of the city as we dined. This course was a tender oven-baked lamb rack with lemon herbs, truffle mashed potato, and thyme juice. Perhaps not an expected meal while in Venice, but it was a deliciously cooked rack of lamb.
Of course, Kuala Lumpur must also be a part of this magnificent “world tour”, and this was our dessert city. Before departure, they treated us to individual trays with five different desserts to sample! We sweetened out pallets with mocha, pavlova, chocolate sundae, tiramisu and sago gula Melaka. While our tummies were full from the cities before, it was hard to leave any dessert behind, as each one was as delicious as the one before.
The Grand Getaway at the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur was a vibrant, filling and very delicious experience. If you are itching to “travel” and to try something different, this is a delightful adventure during these Covid times. The Grand Hyatt also does an excellent job at maintaining SOPs and gives you plenty of space to feel safe and comfortable throughout your “travel”.
