Feel at home in Hugo’s KL
Nestled behind glass screens and neatly trimmed trees at the Ramada Suites on Jalan Berangan, Hugo’s is a great place for a working lunch or to unwind after a hard day’s slog. The contemporary, industrial styling is softened somewhat by the colourful light feature above the bar and the many star-shaped paper lanterns hanging from the ceiling.
The vibrantly coloured shipping container wall and exposed piping works nicely with the mix and match tables, chairs and benches scattered throughout the dining area to create a relaxed yet stylish venue.
Frozen Margarita
With drinks ordered, a frozen margarita for me and a gin and tonic for my companion, we set about exploring the menu. The front page held a lunchtime Indian menu set with a choice of meat and vegetarian curries. I decided upon the Aloo Methi meal and paired it with roasted tomato soup from the list of appetisers whilst my companion chose vegetarian spring rolls and a pizza. The food is a mixture of western and local classics, ensuring there is something for everyone.
Tomato soup
My tomato soup arrived with a nicely toasted and crunchy piece of garlic bread. The soup had a little cream and olive oil added to it, and whilst it was enjoyable, I personally think a little bit more herbs would bring it to life and add an extra layer. That said, it was a comforting taste of my childhood and was a nice opener for my meal.
Spring rolls
I stole a few of my companion’s spring rolls and found them perfectly crispy and tasty. As we were both enjoying them, there was nearly a fight for the last one! I decided to pair my main with a glass of red wine and chose the Australian Cabernet Sauvignon from the house wines. It was a little light to my taste but as it was chilled, it provided a refreshing counterbalance to the spice in my meal.
Potato curry
Shortly after we had finished our starters, our mains arrived. My set came on a silver tray lined with a banana leaf and consisted of 2 papadoms, a cucumber and yoghurt raita, a mango chutney, lime and chilli chutney, a large mound of fragrantly herbed rice and the potato curry. It was delicious. The only bit I wasn’t crazy about was the mango chutney, but then, I am not a fan of mangoes! My Malaysian dining companion couldn’t resist the smells coming from my plate and had to taste. He surmised that the curry was almost exactly the same as his mother makes for curry puffs and the rice was like his mother’s too.
His pizza was topped with my favourite toppings of jalapenos, pineapple, capsicums and lots of cheese, so it was only fair that I got revenge and stole a slice. The crispy base was smothered in a tasty tomato sauce and generously topped with scrumptious veggies.
Hugo’s has a laid back vibe which works well for the area. Just one street away from Changkat, it is a little oasis. They host many special evening events such as the ubiquitous Happy Hour, Friday night Salsa, Thirsty Thursday Ladies Night and have live music on Wednesday nights. As they are part of the Ramada hotel they also offer a great breakfast buffet deal until 10.30 am weekdays and 11 am on weekends. So from morning until late at night, Hugo’s is ready to serve you almost around the clock!
