King of Pop or Southeast Asian Folk Music set for KLPac this month

Music lovers can look forward to a thrilling blast from the past with two vastly different offerings - This Is It: Tribute to Michael Jackson from 15 to 17 March 2024 followed by Spice, Magic and Mystique from 21 to 24 March 2024 at The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) – Pentas 2.

Tribute to the King of Pop

With first peeks of Jaafar Jackson playing his uncle in the biopic Michael flooding the Internet, it seems timely that The klpac Symphonic Band opens its 2024 season with a tribute to the icon himself, Michael Jackson.

Whether with The Jackson 5 or as a solo artist, Michael Jackson gave us countless chart-topping hits, electrifying performances with his signature moonwalk move and ground-breaking music videos. His best-selling album “Thriller” spent 37 weeks at the No. 1 spot on the US Billboard chart and went on to win Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards, one of a whopping thirteen Grammy Awards he would pick up throughout his career.

In the upcoming concert conducted by Cheryl Mah, Malaysians will have the chance to relive these very hits such as Thriller, Billie Jean, Beat It, I Just Can’t Stop Loving You, Smooth Criminal and many more all-time favourites.

It is only the start of a packed season for The klpac Symphonic Band, as it will resume its popular Outreach Collaborative Project An Uncommon Journey III. Aimed at providing 16 to 22 year old wind band musicians with an enriching and educational music experience where they get the chance to work with some of the best, audition submissions via self-recording are now open until 6 May 2024. Journey Through Southeast Asian Folk Music

klpac then eases you into a more tranquil and calming experience that brings you on a cultural journey through Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia. From Northern Sumatra to the Cordillera Mountain Range, the Eastern coast of Peninsular Malaysia to hilly Chiang Mai, The Young KL Singers enchants you with a selection of choral songs on Southeast Asian folklore and folktale under the direction of Mak Chi Hoe and Ian Chow with choreography by Zhafir Muzani.

Audiences are invited to take a seat on mats, forming a cozy circle around the performers to bear witness to this mystical performance and to be part of the magic. As they sing songs that have been passed down from one generation to another like Chua-ay and Cikala Le Pong Pong, you will get a glimpse of the Igorot tribe from the Philippines pounding rice and working the fields and the Pakpak people of Northern Sumatra. Sample a slice of their culture as some songs are accompanied by dance and movement such as Janger from Bali, Tarian Saman from Aceh and Ulek Mayang from Terengganu. Both concerts are licensed by MACP.

YKLS’ latest offering, Spice, Magic and Mystique, also celebrates the 10th anniversary of the partnership between these two directors known for delivering unique choral experiences unlike any other such as Dark/Light and Aurora: Tribute to Bjork (Best Group Performance – Vocal, BOH Cameronian Arts Awards).

klpac is offering a special Backstage Bites Tour + Concert Pass package for 23 March, Saturday, made possible by Yayasan Sime Darby. Embark on klpac’s guided tour experience where you can explore Malaysia’s only fully integrated arts centre housed in a 122 year old heritage building and access areas normally off limits to the public.

After the tour, participants may join the rest of the audience for an engaging pre-show talk, also on 23 March only, by the creative tour de force behind Spice, Magic & Mystique who will be sharing insights on the music and choreography from the show that draws on rich Southeast Asia heritage.

Regular tickets for This Is It: Tribute to Michael Jackson are priced from RM68 to RM100 while regular tickets for Spice, Magic and Mystique are priced from RM60 to RM100. Concession pricing is available. Tickets can be purchased online via www.cloudjoi.com. No phone sales and over-the-counter sales. E-tickets only.
