klPac Line Up Diverse Shows During July Blending East & West, Classics & Electronica

This July, KLPac have a fabulously diverse lineup of captivating shows that bring you on a journey from the West to the East, from classical to electronica. A busy month of choices indeed for music lovers.

Jingju Magic: Love & Bewilderment (12 – 14 July) – Pentas 1
World renowned GuoGuang Opera Company presents two double bills that showcase the magical qualities of Peking opera. Known for their modern sensibilities, the troupe offers a unique gateway to experience age-old culture. GuoGuang successfully reversed the trend of declining audience and performs to sell out shows in Taiwan. To celebrate their return to KL after nine years, these special excerpts showcase the many magical qualities of Jingju (Peking opera) from its enchanting story based on literary classics like the Romance of the Three Kingdoms to the spellbinding techniques of its performers executing martial arts combat scenes or complex skills such as water sleeves and ghostly movements. Performed in Mandarin with English & Mandarin surtitles by an impressive cast of 29 actors and musicians, their 3-day KL performance is made possible by the Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in Malaysia, klpac and National Center for Traditional Arts (Taiwan) with the support of the Ministry of Culture (Taiwan), Advantech Foundation and Pixel World.

The klpac String Orchestra under the baton of Resident Conductor and Music Director, Andrea Sim, presents a colourful programme featuring composers from Europe, Russia and South America including Mendelssohn's Overture to a Midsummer Night's Dream, Tchaikovsky's stirring Themes from Romeo and Juliet, Dvorak's Carnival Overture and selections from Bizet's Carmen.

Strings in the House - Ataneres’ Debut in KL, KLPac - Malaysia 21 July 2024 – Pentas 1

At first glance, string orchestra and house music belong to separate worlds. But do they have to be? With Strings in the House (SitH), the Ataneres Ensemble explores these intersections. Where none exist, they are meticulously created. Classical orchestration is combined with the structure of a DJ set. As a result, the best of both worlds thrives: typical classical themes will seduce the audience into a kind of trance, while trance music benefits from the harmonic and aesthetic depth of a full-blown string orchestra. This unusual synergy proves to be both convincing and compelling. Here, strings dialogue with analogue synthesisers. Laurent Garnier meets Arvo Pärt, and Nils Frahm goes head to head with Philip Glass. Minimalist treasures, cinematic highlights, and covers keep this programme accessible at all times. With SitH, three old friends (Frederik Martens, Jimmy Quintens, and Wim Spaepen) reunite in an unusual quest for alternative beauty. Virtual boundaries between classical music and extravagant parties either evaporate or are boldly ignored. This visit takes place to celebrate Belgium’s National Day with the support of the Belgium Embassy in Malaysia and Flemish Government’s Department of Culture, Youth and Media.

Tunes from the East II with The klpac Orchestra (26 - 28 July) – Pentas 1
This East meets West concert brings together the 70-strong Western orchestra with some of Malaysia's most exciting Chinese instrumentalists and top Chinese composers from abroad and Malaysia, blending Western and Eastern melodies. The klpac Orchestra’s second edition, led by Maestro Lee Kok Leong, brings you an all-new line up of soloists and all-new programme. Also premiering a new composition Tarian by Yeo Chow Shern.
