Your weekly Comedy & Theatre Guide with The City List moves into the last week of June, first week of July . Here’s a selection of what’s coming up over the next week.


Until JULY 7: The Phantom of the Opera is HERE in KL

The world’s most popular musical, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA continues its premiere in Kuala Lumpur for a limited season at the Istana Budaya, Jalan Tun Razak, KL until July 7. The Andrew Lloyd Webber blockbuster has won over 70 major theatre awards, including seven Tony’s on Broadway and four Olivier Awards in the West End. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA became the longest running show in Broadway history on January 9, 2006 when it celebrated its 7,486th performance, surpassing the previous record holder Cats. On January 1, 2018 it celebrated its 13,000th performance and later that month on January 24, the Broadway production celebrated an amazing 30 years on Broadway.

 

 

With 130 cast, crew and orchestra members, jaw-dropping scenery, breathtaking special effects and more than 230 costumes by the late international designer Maria Björnson, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA contains some of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most famous and stirring music, including The Phantom of the Opera, Think of Me and Music of the Night. The original cast recording, with over 40 million copies sold worldwide, is the best-selling cast recording of all time. Tickets are now on sale through TicketCharge.

 

JUNE 26: Open Crack. The Crackhouse Comedy Open Mic Night

Is the smoking ban taking a toll on your social life? Did you choke on your Teh Ais when you saw the Raj Banana Leaf video? Do you wish you could tell all the racist people in the country to get lost? Or do you do a mean impression of Siti Kasim? Open Crack! open-mic night could be for you. Participants are given 3 minutes of stage-time and absolutely anyone can participate!

JUNE 27: Crack the Gong – A Night of Merciless Comedy

A merciless night of stand-up comedy with a sadistic twist. Watch up to 20 acts attempt 5 minutes of funny. If they survive the whole five minutes, they stand a chance to win up to RM500. If you don't like 'em, flash the red card and off they go... to the GONG. To get a spot to perform, arrive by 8.30pm to sign up.

Gotten used to seeing newbies try out their best 3 minutes at a regular comedy open mic? It’s time to level up. In this curated open mic, regular performers and established local comedians will test out their longer material. Watch live as experienced comics test out their conceptual pieces, tricky premises, and storytelling skills just for you!

JUNE 28/29: Crackhouse Comedy Club presents Ben Frank (US)

Ben Frank is a stand-up comedian and improviser from the United States, who currently resides in Shanghai, China. He is a regular at Shanghai’s Kung Fu Komedy Club, where he routinely tears the roof off the venue with his power packed punchlines. In his time on stage Ben has performed alongside international touring acts such as Kurt Metzger, James Adomian, Kyle Grooms, Brad Williams, and Dwayne Perkins.

 

 

Ben also performs as a member of the Shanghai-based improv group People’s Republic of Comedy. Be sure to catch Ben, as his improv skills play into his act and this means there's new comedy magic on stage every night.

JUNE 28/29: Phoon Chi Ho at TJF

Phoon Chi Ho is headlining The Joke Factory. One of the pioneers of Kuala Lumpur’s underground comedy scene, he is best known for being one part of Douglas Lim’s Malaysian Association of Chinese Comedians, and has shared the stage with comedy greats like Dara O’ Briain, Ed Byrne, Harith Iskander and Afdlin Shauki, just to name a few.

 

 

On TV, he has appeared on Astro Warna’s Cakap Melayu Lah, Komediri (2 seasons) and was one of the first Asian comedians to be curated for Comedy Central Asia’s Stand Up, Asia! Soon, he’ll be on Astro’s Sedapnya Mulut! On the silver screen, he bagged a supporting role, playing a ghost hunter, on Mamat Khalid’s Lari Hantu… Lari!
