Review : Light and Salt Café was a bit confusing for me at first, simply because their online Facebook page identified them as Shepherdstar Coffee. However, their brick and mortar shop has a big signboard identifying them as Light and Salt. I didn’t manage to ask the staff why there were discrepancies in the naming of this café, so for now, we shall refer to it as Light and Salt.
If you live in and around Jalan Kuchai Lama, you will know immediately where Full Gospel Assembly Church is. All you have to do is turn into the church area. This café is located in a row of shop lots just beside the main sanctuary.
It was lunchtime when I visited, so I was delighted to note that they had special lunch sets available, ranging from RM15 –RM20 in price. These sets were mainly made up of rice and pasta based dishes and each set comes with a drink. You can choose between a fruit juice or an iced tea.
I opted for some Bacon and Mushroom Carbonara which was quite okay in my opinion. Except that I wished there was a bit more bacon in the mix. The pasta has a lot of minced garlic which was great for me. Another thing I wished they had was a full menu. Right now the place looks pretty new-ish and the menu is written on a blackboard beside the cashier, which is also where you order.
The full menu consists of pretty much the usual café fare. Pasta, burgers and coffee make up the bulk of it. Apart from the Carbonara set, I also ordered some onion rings and a Tiramisu cake. The Tiramisu was probably the best decision I’ve made all week. It came covered in crushed almonds and other nuts. I absolutely loved it. The cream was light and fluffy, as was the cake. If you ever come here, I advise you to take at least one slice of any cake. Trust me, your visit will be worth it.
Each slice of cake goes for about RM12- RM15. Among their other flavors is Red Velvet, and you can just choose whatever you want since their cakes are displayed prominently in a glass cabinet next to the cashier.
The interior is still pretty minimalist at the moment, which is fine. It’s a great place to drop by if you have time during lunch. It wasn’t crowded when I was there. My bill came to about RM 37 with four items so it’s pretty okay. I saw a few people working here too, so I would say it’s a pretty good place to come if you need peace and quiet.
The only issue you may face when coming here is parking. Try looking for parking further off at the housing area behind the café. The walk there will not be taxing as the housing estate is pretty small. Otherwise, if you’re an FGA member coming in for meetings or service, you can just park in church and walk over to eat before your gathering starts.
