Award winning Malaysian theatre company Liver & Lung are bringing their critically acclaimed cabaret, Clinic, to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this summer. This would be the first time a Malaysian production would perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, marking a true landmark for Malaysian arts and culture.
The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is the world's largest arts festival, featuring over 50,000 performances of over 3,000 different shows in just one month. It is an important cultural bedrock for rising artists. Productions like Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Fleabag and Six The Musical were discovered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Liver & Lung are bringing their original cabaret Ganesh & Cydney's Clinic, which they first debuted at Merdekarya in 2020. Clinic tells the story of two quack 'love' doctors, Ganesh & Cydney, as they travel the globe attempting to heal patients of loneliness and 'lovesickness'.
The cabaret is a fun blend of glitter, comedy and camp and features original songs by Shafeeq Shajahan, Liver & Lung co-founder and recent recipient of the BOH Cameronian Arts Award for Best Director in Musical Theatre. Shajahan also plays the title character of Ganesh The Great opposite rising London-based comedienne Natalie Durkin, who plays Cydney Debonaire.
Liver & Lung were one out of thousands of production companies that applied to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. To top it off, they were selected to perform at the Underbelly, which is one of the festival's more prestigious venues to perform at.
“Malaysian storytelling is on the cusp of growth,” says Shafeeq. "We need to keep expanding out and getting Malaysian artists on international platforms. I am so incredibly proud of Liver & Lung and am extremely happy with what we've managed to achieve so far."
Liver & Lung is an award-winning international production company founded by Shafeeq Shajaha. After winning three awards at the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards 2020 and launching Kuala Lumpur’s first integrated digital arts festival, KloudFest in 2021, Liver & Lung has been committed to upholding the arts despite the challenges posed by the pandemic. This release marks their third project for 2022.
