Prepare to be mesmerised this 13 December 2024 as Marini's on 57 brings you world-renowned DJ Mark Robinson on the decks at Marini’s On 57.
For closing in 30 years now UK's Mark Robinson has been fortunate enough to be able to live out his dreams of being an international headline D record label Boss, A&R, music producer and event manager, across such iconic entities as London Digital Radio Station Soho, Toolroom Records, Peppermint Jam Label, Kinky Malinki and later, the UK/Ibiza based party brand, Pukka Up and its infamous Ibiza boat parties, as well as holding a residency at The Gallery at Ministry of Sound, London.
Now at the helm of Asylum Talent, he is enjoying helping other talented artists achieve their dreams and goals. He's been a multiple visitor to Malaysian decks in the not too distant past and does love it here, as we caught up with him over the weekend from London for a short Q&A just before his latest visit.
How do you feel heading back to Asia to play here in KL? When was the last time you played in Malaysia?
Its been a little while since I was last in Malaysia, my last trip was back in 2018 as part of my 'Catch 22' tour. I used to come fairly regularly pre covid, 2-4 times a year and always enjoyed the scene, I celebrated my 20th Anniversary of touring at Marini's so it's gonna be great to come back. I'm happy to say that over the years Ive made some great friends in the City and hope to see some familiar faces on the 13th.
How has the year been for yourself, with all your A&R, label work and gigs this year? What have been your highlights for the year?
Things have been strong this year, my artist management business has definitely kicked up a gear with some big successes for the roster. We've released almost 50 records across our Asylum Audio Label Group, and worked with the likes of Calvin Harris, Alok, Sigala, Camelphat, Hot Since 82, and many more of the scenes heavyweight artists and labels.
You've been in the scene now for closing in on 30 years, what keeps you going for this long?
It's crazy to think I'm almost hitting 30 years on the road. In some ways it's scary really as blink and you've missed it haha. I've been very lucky to maintain a profile or status in the industry for so long, it's never been so competitive and these days you have to have many different abilities to maintain a live presence, particularly without releasing 'hit' records.
But in many ways i live and breathe music - all week long booking headline artists for shows and pairing them with my artists on records is exciting and keeps me at the forefront of the industry. Seeing my artists develop their careers gives me a real buzz too and when I get to travel and play their music (and mine) to great reactions just fuel that fire within me.
What have been some of the highlights of your decades in the clubbing scene?
There's been many many highlights but if I were to pick one that's relevant to Malaysia it would probably be the first time I ever played at Marini's. A few years prior to getting the show there I saw a documentary about Malaysia and the Petronas Towers were featured. I love seeing the world and was adamant that I would one day get to see them, sometime later thanks to my good friends Daniela (Art Xtreme Media/Sweatbox) and Jeff (Jefferson (Miss Moneypennys and formerly Marini's on 57) managed to secure a prime view of them with a wicked show at Marini's.
What can we expect Friday when we see you and what can we expect looking forward to the New Year?
Musically I'm gonna mix things up a little. I've been digging into different scenes recently and love to try and bring a few surprises you wouldn't normally expect me to play. I really can't wait to be back in KL!
