In conjunction with its 60th Anniversary celebrations, The Philharmonic Society of Selangor (The Phil), the oldest music society in Malaysia, is organising a Weekend of Music & Laughter at Sunway Putra Hotel from 25 -26 August 2018.
Members of the public who are keen on exploring singing and finding their voice – no prior music knowledge is required are invited to be a part of this learning experience. “This 2-day event is about having fun with your voice, exploring different music, meeting new people – all under the energetic, multi award winning guest conductor Dr Jonathan Welch, who’s coming from Australia just to lead this programme”, said Cheryl Teh, Chairperson, The Philharmonic Society of Selangor. “If you’ve never sung with a choir before, it will be a wonderful opportunity to explore something new and meet like-minded individuals”.
The programme on Day 1 (Saturday 25 August) will begin with a session of Laughter Yoga as a warm-up exercise. Subsequently, Dr Welch will lead through a series of songs, the aim of which is to perform these songs on stage (as part of a Mass Choir on Day 2). All signed up participants will automatically be part of the Mass Choir which is made up of all the individuals and organisations participating.
The weekend will culminate on Day 2 (Sunday afternoon) with the Everyone Can Sing Concert – Entry to the Concert is FREE for the public but by invitation. For invitations, please email your name and contact number to selangor.phil@gmail.com indicating the number of tickets required (limited to 4 tickets under each name). For Sunday, please arrive before 2:30pm to collect the invitations. Invitations not picked up by 2:45pm will be released. All seats are free seating.
In addition to the Mass Choir, the other highlights of the show will be the performance of “There is a Dream” by Victor Chua. Victor first composed and performed this piece for the Commonwealth Games in 1998 and twenty years later, he will be performing it with new lyrics. Also performing will be notable local singers Janet Lee and Elvira Arul plus the National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM) Maestros, and the Choir of The Philharmonic Society of Selangor
“We believe everyone can sing; it’s probably just that you haven’t found your voice yet, so let’s find it together! As an organisation that has been touching the lives of so many members of our community for six decades now, we can safely say that we have definitely made an impact in terms of how singing unifies people from all segments of life,” encouraged Teh.
In conjunction with its 60th Anniversary, The Phil has also pledged to donate a total of RM60,000 to various organisations in the course of the year. Some of these presentations will take place during the Weekend of Music & Laughter.
Fee for Saturday session is as follows: General public (RM150); Senior citizens aged 55 and above (RM120); Students with valid ID (RM100). Tea breaks and lunch will be included for participants. To register visit http://goo.gl/jLCwwG
