Spend a Federal Territory Day (February 1, 2025) at Malaysia’s one and only local original music bar Merdekarya in Petaling Jaya for an evening of live music performances with The Raven Returns featuring Franco-Malaysian alternative pop artist ANELIE, folk rock group Faye Faire and singer-songwriter Umar Akmal.
The Raven Returns marks ANELIE's first show in Asia, bringing her dark, alternative pop style to Malaysia for the first time. If you’re a fan of unique music blending dark pop influences with a French touch, this is a chance to experience her live performance in the vibrant setting of Merdekarya. ANELIE has built up her music career in the United Kingdom, where her music has appeared on BBC Introducing, which has a storied history of pushing the careers of the likes of Marina and The Diamonds, Ellie Goulding, The 1975, Alt-J and more..
She styles her dark Alternative-Pop with hints of a French touch inspired by her Parisian upbringing. Her intimate writing and carved productions are tailored to spotlight her voice, classified as “warm, inviting and somewhat otherworldly” (BBC Introducing).
Since moving to London, she has become an active performer, whilst working on new releases. Last November, ANELIE released Raven, her first unapologetically dark pop track, announcing the darker and deeper colours of her debut EP to be released in spring 2025.
Kuala Lumpur-based folk-rockers Faye Faire enchants its listeners with its female-fronted line-up and glorious harmonies, melding together influences such as The Beatles, Declan McKenna, Elliott Smith, and Boygenius. In February 2024, they released their debut album titled In My Mind in tribute to late co-founder I–Shan Esther. They have since brought their music to audiences at the Fete de la Musique KL 2024; Phil’s Studio, Singapore; WAK2024 Festival in Kuching, Sarawak; the Media Solidarity Festival in GMBB, Pudu; and Rock’N’Riuh at the Sepang International Circuit. Their single Siren was nominated for the Top 30 Rock category of the Anugerah Lagu Indie 2023/24. Additionally, In My Mind was a nominee in the Best Album of the Year category in JUICE Malaysia’s 2024 round-up of the Malaysian music scene. Their current line-up features Alena Nadia (guitars/vocals), Athanasius Leong (keyboards), Nur Khairi Hamidi (guitar), Ungku Najwa (violin/vocals), Yogavelan Balamurli (bass/vocals).
Umar Akmal is more than just a singer-songwriter; he is a captivating storyteller who weaves narratives into his music. Umar Akmal’s sound can be best described as an intimate gathering of friends at his house, listening to him play guitar and share stories. His soft and sweet vocals, paired with the bittersweet tones of his guitar, create a comforting yet haunting sonic experience. Umar’s music resonates with fans of artists like Phoebe Bridgers, Novo Amor, Cat Stevens, and boygenius, offering a blend of introspective lyrics and soothing melodies.
