FRIDAY 9 March 2018
RAW presents Karim Sahraoui (FR). Here is a true renaissance for French producer Karim Sahraoui who had put his career on hold to pursue new horizons in Asia. However, it was during this time that two elements intertwined to change the course of his life. The first was spiritual. Away from his normal environment and western habits, Karim embarked on a spiritual journey that has profoundly affected his music. The DJ and producer finally found answers to questions he had long initiated about his faith, the nature of his music and the electronic music scene.
The second was musical and the landmark encounters he has had with Derrick May: they met in Singapore in 2010 where the iconic author of Strings of Life enquired about Karim’s ‘journey’; and again two years’ later – just as Karim was at the point of giving up – Derrick got back in touch, full of admiration for his new tracks (Karim released Mr Teleportation and Nightflow in late 2012) and keen to sign him to his label. Born and raised in France, he started djing in 1994 and later producing in 2000 under various aliases, notably Djinxx but more recently under his real name.
The French DJ and producer has created a dizzying discography including releases on Cocoon, Ovum, Delsin, Cocoon, ARTS, OFF and Bedrock and has helped to discover musicians such as Chymera and Elias Landberg (Skudge). 2018 will see yet another huge milestone in the career of Sahraoui with his first ever release on one of the planet’s most revered labels: R&S. Karim Sahraoui has a new momentum, fed by the same dynamism for which he is known and using the know-how and inspiration which has singled out such epic works as Stella or Nightflow.
Special features for the night on this special International Women’s week take will be Jiro resident InJooWie as well as Yenn Lim.
INJOO WiE is an artiste with no boundaries of music. She speaks a different language of music where instead of drawing a boundary between different type of music, she found the beauty in each of them and combined them into a beautiful language. Through her vast knowledge of different types of music, she has produced her own style of music. She then realized her true passion in being a DJ/Producer lies within Disco, House, Synth Pop and French Electronic.
Since moving to Kuala Lumpur in 2015, she made her presence known at the finest venues in KL with her charismatic and sometimes funky style, which then truly made her known as one of the talents in KL underground scene. As how the KL underground scene has dramatically developed throughout the years, she began her venture into techno, electronic, and other genres which were only known as subgenres when she first began her adventure here in KL.
One-of-a-kind musician Yenn Lim has rocked the DJ scene since 2012, sharing her passion for electronic dance music to party-goers in bars, clubs, events and private parties. Born and bred in Kuala Lumpur, Yenn Lim grew up on an electric diet of jazz and classical music, oftentimes discovered by rummaging through her parent’s record collections. At the age of six, she took up the piano as her musical gateway.
She has since explored many other avenues and genres, and has now found her calling the electronic dance music. While she sports a versatile playlist, Yenn Lim’s musical style can also lean towards beats that are darker in nature that you might spot her playing sometimes at the underground scene such as Under9. She is also known to be able to dish out some deep, tribal and tech house music, bringing sexy yet groovy ambience to late-night sets. This semi-finalist for the Pioneer Digital Battle 2012 and 2014 is definitely poised to inject her unique exuberance into upcoming events and parties.
