Carl Nielsen’s halcyon travels to Athens inspired him to compose his magnificent Helios Overture, which depicts the sun rising from the beautifully idyllic Aegean Sea, its journey across the sky, and sunset over the horizon. Inspired by Mozart, Richard Strauss’ Duet Concertino depicts an unlikely story of a bear (bassoon) falling in love with a princess (clarinet) performed by MPO principals Alexandar Lenkov and Gonzalo Esteban. Finnish conductor Okko Kamu, concludes the concert with Tchaikovsky’s moving Sixth Symphony.
