Shu-Si Chen’s Phoenix is a brief prelude to Sibelius’s masterful Violin Concerto performed by the brilliant Latvian Baiba Skride, winner of the 2001 Queen Elisabeth Competition. Deemed as a very technically difficult concerto to perform, it is an original, masterly and exhilarating work to hear. Kodaly’s lively and colourful Hungarian folk Dances from Galanta frames the concert. Gilbert Varga conducts.
