NOVEMBER 2/3:  All Hail the Queen: A Tribute to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin with Alemay Fernandez and the Michael Veerapen Band

Hailed by TimeOut magazine as one of Singapore’s “best-loved entertainers”, Alemay Fernandez is a veteran performer in the Asian jazz scene. In her illustrious 19 year career, she has performed with the likes of The Count Basie Orchestra, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, David Foster, Gregory Porter, Ernie Watts, Randy Brecker, Antonio Hart, Mitch Frohman, Jay Anderson, Lewis Nash, Ed Cherry, Incognito, The Platters’ Bobby Soul, William Close & The Earth Harp Collective and opened for Laura Fygi & Benny Golson. She has sung for A-listers like Kevin Spacey, Ethan Hawke, Joss Stone, Kurt Elling, Lea Salonga, Paloma Picasso, Serena Williams as well as Presidents & Prime Ministers. She performs internationally at festivals and jazz venues worldwide.

 

Alemay is known for her sultry tone, powerhouse vocals and an onstage presence that keeps the audience eating out of the palm of her hand. Her album of originals “Hard To Imagine” launched to a sold-out concert at the Esplanade in July 2016 to rave reviews. Since then, she has toured the album in Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Colombo, Hanoi as well as a U.S. tour in the Summer of 2017 where she headlined at the legendary Birdland Jazz Club in NY.

As an educator, she has worked with vocal students of all ages, conducted vocal and performance workshops. She is Vocal Coach for NUS Jazz Band and Lecturer at the Lasalle College Of The Arts Singapore. Alemay is Jazz Ambassador for the Jazz at the Red Dot Workshop Series.

NOVEMBER 2/3: Crackhouse presents Steve Lee

Steve Lee is a Chinese-American Disabled Stand-up Comedian based in the US. Centred around his experiences of racism and living with disabilities, Steve challenges stereotypes and blends stories and punchlines to convey his core belief: we are all equal. Having opened for the likes of Tom Rhodes and Brad Williams, he was a finalist at the Hong Kong International Comedy Competition, was invited to perform at the Burbank Comedy Festival 'Best of the Fest'. For Steve, comedy is a way to get people - including himself - to laugh about our own shortcomings.

NOVEMBER 2/3 Bobo KL presents Aina Abdul and John Dip Silas

Mentor alumni and bilingual singer-songwriter Aina Abdul returns to Bobo with a new show, alongside Jazz wunderkind, John Dip Silas Music. Aina recently released her single 'Reminiscing' and wowed the nation with her vocals at the recent Filem Festival Malaysia singing the epic ‘Ribut Hati’ off the movie soundtrack of Tombiruo: Penunggu Rimba. At Bobo, Aina and JDS bring slick arrangements of soul numbers given the jazz treatment.

NOVEMBER 3/4: Violinist Ray Chen with the MPO

Sparks are sure to fly as hotshot violinist Ray Chen and the MPO serve up a feast of Iberian flavours in Lalo’s sizzling showpiece, Symphonie Espagnole. For appetizer and dessert, savour a delightful sampling of the best of France and Bohemia.

NOVEMBER 2:  Kaya the Band at Rils

Kaya is no stranger to the scene. Bravely independent and having grown on strength, have now evolved into a funky blues powerhouse. Definitely a force to reckon and an act to watch out for. Logan's on stage dynamite persona, is coupled with his flair on a regular Strat strung upside down. He prefers it like Hendrix.

NOVEMBER 3: Incognito by The Lucid Loft ft lost spaces and God Complex

'INCOGNITO' reveals itself in the setting of an old heritage building rejuvenated by fresh beats and silky vocals. The dystopian scene is awash with conflicting lights giving you an unsettling feeling but digesting the Urbanscapes x TheLucid Loft combined display of art music and fashion will be leaving you wanting to stay and absorb everything a little longer.

 

 

Featuring upcoming indie pop band 'lost spaces', fashion installation ‘Pedestriiiiiit’, and TheLucidLoft's 'God Complex' drinks will be sold at the venue with a cocktail menu curated by Jon Lee from Tippling Club Singapore.

Under the Urbanscapes umbrella of the city-wide creative festival, 'INCOGNITO' is curated by The Lucid Loft in partnership with Breaking Music and fashion labels Idle/ido 3.in.one DY/DX. Studio to bring you a visual and sonic experience like no other

NOVEMBER 4:  Sherine & friends at NBT

Sherine is a Hong Kong-based jazz singer who has just released her debut album in Hong Kong. She is currently promoting her album in Asia and New York. For one night only at NBT, she will be playing original tunes from her jazz album and jazz standards with top-notch Malaysian musicians namely Tay Cher Siang (keys), Az Samad (guitar), Julian Chan (saxophone), AJ (upright bass), and Kae Vin (drums).

 

Sherine Wong’s musical path has been a journey, which started over three decades ago in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and continues to this day all over the world.

Though singing called to her at a young age, Sherine’s varied interests meant that she first became Malaysia’s track and field representative at the Asia Games. This attention eventually culminated in being selected as both a Miss Malaysia Universe winner and a Miss Asia representative.

Subsequently, Sherine’s model looks enabled her to work on a long series of television and print campaigns for such clients as the Malaysian Tourist Board, HSBC, Ocean Park, Vidal Sassoon, Levi’s, Samsung and Shiseido, as well as dozens of others. The poise Sherine displayed in these commercials lead to a starring role in the Japanese independent film “Fly Me To Minami”.

NOVEMBER 4: Le Noir KL presents Acoustic Fourplay

A live acoustic band, lined up of musicians who have been in the music industry for more than a decade. Ideally named, simply performing songs ranging from the late 60s up to the current Top 40s in an acoustic manner to sooth your every acoustic musical fantasy. Muzza performs early at 7pm.

NOVEMBER 4: Originals Only Open Mic #6

The Originals Only Open Mic is Open Mic Malaysia’s brand spankin' new open mic night which starting at Geographer Café Kuala Lumpur the first Sunday of every month. As the name suggests, it's a full blown originals only do. This inaugural Sunday will see Heerraa, Keith Kamalaraj, Markiza and Peter,  Kien Lim, Natasha Azlan, Ruff, Fadirul Fais and Iman Najwa.

NOVEMBER 5:  Urbanscapes 2018: Alam Bunyian

For the first time ever, Alam Bunyian will be bringing their magical and mystical vibes to be at Urbanscapes! Famously known for their cross-scenes artists performing on the same platform, they are stepping up their game this time by risking it all at The Bee, Publika on the 5th of November 2018, with artists ranging from acoustic singer songwriter, to heavy post-rock, to pop-punk, jazz to reggae-ska Nusantara and many more!

 

 

With a mega line up of artists of Endee Ahmad, Kelvyn Yeang, Dè Fusion, Patriots, The Filters, Berdosa, Oceanlights, Budak Nakal Hujung Simpang, and Tilu, please expect the unexpected as artists will be performing their full force, accompanied by superb visual arts at the same time. NOVEMBER 6: Fresco Harmonica Ensemble at NBT

The Ensemble at NBT will feature Aiden Soon (Chord Harmonica), Evelyn Choong (Chromatic Harmonica), Sharene Tang (Chromatic Harmonica), and Lee Feng Yi (Double Bass Harmonica).

Fresco Harmonica is a world-class harmonica performing group in Malaysia as well as internationally, formed by Aiden & Evelyn in year 2006. The team was successfully crowned Double World Harmonica Champions both in year 2009 & 2013 in Germany.

 

 

They had also been invited to perform in many countries such as South Korea, Singapore, Philippines, North Korea, Macau, China, and many others.

Fresco Harmonica has already shared the stage with Asia’s most prominent and popular artistes and celebrities including Shila Amzah, Khalil Fong, Nicholas Teo, Wincci Soo, Alan Tam, Hacken Lee, David Wong and many others.

Their passion in presenting the most unique features and superior performances had attracted attentions from the media and several television networks, gaining excellent remarks and compliments from general public. They also received several awards and honours by government and even private associations as compliments for their achievements.

NOVEMBER 7: Canto Jazz Love Songs Unlimited with Canto Divo at NBT

Canto Divo is a good-looking duo made up of Alan S and Yee Yee. Canto Divo sings Cantopop fused with pop/jazz elements. Together the duo will spice up all your fave Cantopop hits by Jacky Cheung, Alan Tam and Leslie Cheung and many more.

 

 

Yee Yee is a veteran singer who started singing from a young age, having a legendary father who was a well-known composer/producer of local Chinese pop in the 70s and early 80s. She started out as a model for magazines and TV commercials, and actress (TV drama, movie) before entering into the music industry. She was also a beauty pageant queen. She ventured into Taiwan Chinese pop market with 2 Chinese albums in 2004. Her multi-faceted talent coupled with her good looks allow her to attract many sponsors and commercial opportunities. More importantly, her Cantonese diction and sweet voice is what attracted pop pop factory.

Alan S, also a fashion model, before being talent scouted by pop pop factory. He has been the face of many famous brands (Gucci, YSL etc. etc.) as a catwalk model. But his main calling is jazz singing, with a voice perfectly cut for jazz music. At a towering height of 6’ 3”, Alan has a presence like no other. His aspiration is to become the Chinese Michael Buble in Asia. Alan S is currently sought after by many wine bars and jazz venues in town.

Get over that mid-week slump with a dose of comedy as it’s supposed to be – uncensored and honest. Raw, fast paced and edgy, Open Crack! Witness the grassroots comedy scene with newbies, regulars and if you’re lucky a surprise guest comic. The best 3 minute set of the night will cash RM100 AND an opportunity to perform on the weekend shows. NOVEMBER 8: Gypsy Project at NBT

Gypsy Project is a quartet, led by Wan Gigi, that pays homage to the style of gypsy swing popularised by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli. Their repertoire consists of mainly jazz standards and classic Malay jazz tunes composed by Tan Sri P Ramlee, Jimmy Boyle and the likes.
