FEBRUARY 9-10: As You Like It (KL)
Rosalind, the daughter of a banished duke, falls in love with Orlando at a wrestling match. Her usurping uncle, jealous of her popularity banishes her from the court. Disguised as a boy, she leaves with her cousin Celia and the jester Touchstone, to seek out her father in the Forest of Arden. Here she meets Orlando again and, under the guise of a young man, Ganymede, counsels him in the art of love and wooing.
The Handlebards, the world’s first cycling theatre company, return to Asia with their brilliantly absurd all-female version of Shakespeare’s most comical romance. FEBRUARY 9/10: Nita Aartsen Trio at No Black Tie
Nita Aartsen, who has been described as the ‘rising star’ of Classical and Jazz in Indonesia, is an Indonesian pianist and musician. She was born in Jakarta, Indonesia and started learning the piano at the tender age of five. After spending three years in the Moscow Conservatory learning Contemporary Jazz, she returned to Indonesia in 1986, to take over as the state pianist of the Republic of Indonesia.
In that role, which she held for over fifteen years, she had the privilege of playing for the then US president Bill Clinton as well as Prince Bernard of Holland amongst many other distinguished state guests. Simultaneously, she created a niche for herself in the world of Indonesian music, playing with and also arranging and composing for such established names as Erwin Gutawa, Dwiki Dharmawan, KLA Project, Indra Lesmana, Gilang Ramadhan, God Bless and Titi DJ.
Between 1999 and 2000 she lived and worked in the Netherlands, working with Dutch musicians in the studio and also at live performances. After returning to Jakarta in 2001, she started working towards her goal of taking Classical Music and Jazz to a larger audience. In the last eight years, she has done numerous TV and radio shows, played at events and concerts at home and abroad, held regular gigs at premium music venues in Jakarta and slowly built a strong foundation upon which to launch herself into the world stage. More recently she has played with Michael Paulo and Pauline Wilson from the USA for the annual Java Jazz Festival.
All the hard work and dedication finally paid off when she received a three-album recording contract with the Indonesian label, Platinum. She released her first album with the Nita Aartsen Quatro, titled ‘all nite out’ in 2009. It is a tour de force of Latin Jazz tracks, all of which are based on Classical or Jazz standards. Nita in her own indomitable style has taken something serious and sombre like Classical and has turned it into feet-tapping, hip-swaying Latino music with a generous helping of Jazz. The result is fun and enjoyable, to say the least. The album received good reviews in the Indonesian media and she has been doing concerts all over Indonesia to promote the album.

FEBRUARY 10: Julie Byrne Live in Malaysia
Highly acclaimed singer/songwriter Julie Byrne has had a busy year. Her latest album has garnered critical praise and placed on many 'album of the year' lists by the liks of Pitchfork and the Guardian.
Her first album was released in January 2014, on Chicago based DIY label Orindal after first existing as two separate cassette releases. “Rooms With Walls and Windows” went on to become a true modern-day word of mouth success story (it would have to be for an artist who shuns all forms of social media). By the end of the year, it was voted number 7 in Mojo Magazine’s Best Albums, with the Huffington Post calling it, “2014’s Great American Album”; a collection of hushed intimate front porch psych-folk songs, recalling the greats, but strongly emanating the essence of timeliness. Her journey to follow was captured in two summers through Europe, playing the Green Man Festival and End of the Road, as well as lesser trodden tour paths around Italy.
In the live arena she enchants, leaving rooms and festival crowds mesmerized by her voice and warm presence, where many find a real connection with Byrne’s intimate songs. This feeling is often shared: “The most magical thing about performing these songs is that afterwards, so many of the conversations I have escape all small talk,” tells Julie. “Shows don’t always have this spirit, but when they do, every person has contributed, even unknowingly, to creating a space of responsiveness to each other through vulnerability, through our unified experience and honesty about our sorrow and our emergence.”

His comedic patter relating his experiences as a frustrated Englishman over 15 years in Malaysia has had audiences in stitches with his self-deprecating style and near-the-knuckle banter.
