NOVEMBER 9: Groove Messengers ft Kirana Kay at NBT
Based in Kuala Lumpur, Bob Skunjas and the Groove Messengers delivers authentic bebop, post-bop, latin jazz and fusion music. Inspired by John Coltrane, Chucho Valdez and Herbie Hancock, this band also explores a wide array of arrangements involving the combination tone colour of alto saxophone and trumpet. The signature phrases and rhythmic-based improvisation of Kenny Garrett inspired the band members to explore his musical approach, which led to the formation of this band in 2016. With that, the band aims to perform in various local and international jazz festivals and jazz clubs to showcase its exploration in authentic jazz music.
Kirana Kay is a vocalist that performs authentic Jazz, Pop Rock, Traditional Malay, R&B and Soul. Compatible with contemporary genres, Kirana is a regular feature at Kuala Lumpur’s entertainment industry. A gifted vocalist with wide array of modern contemporary repertoire.

A veteran of the circuit, Carey Marx concocts his own blend of dark humour with mischief and glee. His wilful disregard for the controversial and taboo is tempered with his ability to find joy in the most unexpected places.
Having played all the most prestigious clubs and festivals in the world, Carey has performed in every continent and claims to have travelled more in his life than he has stood still. In 2012, he had a heart attack and - because he's a comedian - wrote a highly acclaimed show which described his battle back to health, cementing him as Britain's top heart attack comedian.

An acoustic singer-songwriter and a guitarist. Yogi has been actively performing as a solo artist and with his band for over 7 years. His musical genre ranges from old school rock to country and from alternative to acoustic soul. His debut EP in English was released worldwide in 2015 and he ventured into the music industry in Nepal with his singles (comprising of 2 songs) in 2017. Before moving to Malaysia, he was the lead vocalist of his Band called “YoGi & the Quarter Lives” and the Pop / Rock & Roll band called “SUGR” in India. He also briefly featured as the lead vocalist for the hard-rock band called “BRB – Brim River Bridge” and as a guest vocalist for a renowned old school rock band called “Altered Scales”.

Fenna de Jong is a singer and pianist from the Netherlands who found her passion for playing music when she was a kid. She has a love for soul music and covers songs while leaving her singing style mark on them. Loves to sing on weddings, conferences and parties, and she recently added the open mics to her list when she moved to Kuala Lumpur.

Natasha Azlan started open mic-ing regularly in Feb 2018. Often listening to the likes of Ella Fitzgerald & Madeleine Peyroux, she covers jazzy tunes from time to time. A few months ago, she's begun to write her own songs - she thinks they're possibly categorised under 'folk jazz'.

NOVEMBER 10: Frankie Sixes: A Night of Swing Jazz at NBT
Fresh from playing The Iskandar Puteri Jazz Festival and in preparation for their slot at Urbanscapes 2018 later this month, the Frankie Sixes brings a night classic swing jazz tunes from the 1940s-50s. Be prepared to move your feet.
The Frankie Sixes is a new swing jazz band with some familiar faces from the Malaysian music scene. The band, a side project of singer-songwriter Reza Salleh, started out playing for lindy hop dancers, a kind of swing dance from the 1940-50s. Reza is an AIM award-winning singer- songwriter and a regular face in the independent music scene. His debut album “Realize” topped radio charts the year of its release and has led him to performances in Korea, Japan, Thailand, Australia, Indonesia and Singapore. He’s performed at the 18th annual Sunset Live Festival, Asia Music Found Showcase and the Nakasu Jazz Festival in Japan, as well as being invited to the Jazz & Wine music series and the Daegu Folk Festival in Korea. On local shores he’s appeared most major music festivals and has had his own showcase at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas. Reza is the main vocal of the band.
On keys is Ee Jeng, one of the most well knows jazz musicians in the Malaysian jazz scene. In addition to playing most local jazz festivals in the country, internationally he’s played for the likes of Randy Bernsen, Laura Fygi and Indro Hardjodikoro, among many others. He’s normally seen leading the 8-year-old Ee Jeng Trio doing a repertoire of jazz originals or leading Funkatorie, a soul and funk act.
On double bass is Che Wan, who has played for some of the top jazz practitioners in the Malaysian music industry including Michael Verappen, David Gomes, Patrick Tebrack, Junji Delfino and many more. Outside of jazz he has sessioned for the likes of Yuna, Guba and Tony Eusoff.
On drums is KJ, trained musically in the esteemed Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California. Together with Malaysian Jazz Ensemble WVC, KJ has drummed in many parts of the world such as China, Taiwan, Macau, Thailand, Canada, The United States and even the Caribbean Islands.

NOVEMBER 11: Julian Moreen International Quartet at NBT
Malaysian guitarist Andrew Cheng is returning from New York for an Asia tour with German Singer/Songwriter and Jazz Pianist Julian Moreen, whom he met during his studies at Berklee College of Music. After many shows in Boston and NYC, they’re now on tour through Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan, presenting their original music, a celebration of musical and lyrical storytelling that draws from modern jazz, folk and indie pop music.
Julian Moreen is an award-winning jazz pianist and singer/songwriter from Germany. After receiving a scholarship to study at the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, he moved to the United States, where he met Malaysian guitarist Andrew Cheng. After graduating, both moved together to New York and started performing at many venues around the city while furthering their studies with famed NY Jazz musicians. Their original music draws from modern jazz, folk and indie pop music with lyrics influenced by the poetry of writers such as Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell. Joined by Singaporean drummer Eugene Seow and Taiwanese bassist Yu Jia Liu, they’re now on a month-long tour through Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan before traveling to Germany.

Dani is back again with The Nightshades once more, the band that she used to perform with when she first started out. This show promises originals, and jazz and blues numbers that will keep your feet tapping and leave you wanting more.
Dani started out in 2015 and has since been a regular fixture at a few of Kuala Lumpur’s jazz establishments such as No Black Tie. Apart from her love for singing jazz and blues classics, she enjoys performing her own originals which puts a spin on classic jazz music. While she’s been performing regularly, her unique voice and engaging originals have granted her invitations to perform at various festivals such as the IP Jazz Festival (Johor), JB International Arts Festival (Johor) and also the Publika Jazz Festival (Kuala Lumpur). Her efforts have also opened up collaborative doors for her to work with a few of Malaysia’s best musicians like Dasha Logan, Michael Veerapen, Lewis Pragasam and international guitarist, Robin Banerjee, who was the late Amy Winehouse’s guitarist. Lately, Dani has been working with her band mates on their first EP which will be released by year end for everyone to enjoy.

Canto Divo is a good-looking duo made up of Alan S and Yee Yee. Canto Divo sings Cantopop fused with pop/jazz elements. Together the duo will spice up all your fave Cantopop hits by Jacky Cheung, Alan Tam and Leslie Cheung and many more.
Yee Yee is a veteran singer who started singing from a young age, having a legendary father who was a well-known composer/producer of local Chinese pop in the 70s and early 80s. She started out as a model for magazines and TV commercials, and actress (TV drama, movie) before entering into the music industry. She was also a beauty pageant queen. She ventured into Taiwan Chinese pop market with 2 Chinese albums in 2004. Her multi-faceted talent coupled with her good looks allow her to attract many sponsors and commercial opportunities. More importantly, her Cantonese diction and sweet voice is what attracted pop pop factory.
Alan S, also a fashion model, before being talent scouted by pop pop factory. He has been the face of many famous brands (Gucci, YSL etc. etc.) as a catwalk model. But his main calling is jazz singing, with a voice perfectly cut for jazz music. At a towering height of 6’ 3”, Alan has a presence like no other. His aspiration is to become the Chinese Michael Buble in Asia. Alan S is currently sought after by many wine bars and jazz venues in town.
