No Black Tie KL special highlights for the week

No Black Tie KL special highlights for the week

No Black Tie welcomes a double dose of Jazz Surprises with Nick Hampton from New York and Dutch musician Henk Kraaijeveld.

Nick Hempton (NYC) Night Owl Tour 2018 30 November – 1 December 2018

A swinging, soulful, CD release! Straight from the jazz organ rooms of Harlem, veteran New York saxophonist Nick Hempton is bringing the blues, boogaloos, and shuffles of Jimmy Smith, Stanley Turrentine, and Sonny Stitt to Kuala Lumpur. Hempton, along with organist Oliver von Essen and drummer Aaron James, will be dishing out “big fat grooves, a real sense of swing, strong melodies and even stronger rhythms” over two rousing nights of swinging straight ahead jazz.

Nick Hempton is an alto and tenor saxophonist, composer, and bandleader, producing new music in the modern/mainstream tradition. Calling New York home since 2004, he headlines clubs throughout the city, as well as concert halls and festivals around the world. Influenced by the greats of the instrument – Dexter Gordon, Sonny Stitt, Cannonball Adderley, etc., and informed by a youth misspent playing Rhythm & Blues and Ska in his native Australia, Hempton's jazz is original, approachable, and always swinging.

Quartet 5-6 December 2018

Henk Kraaijeveld is a versatile jazz vocalist and songwriter from The Netherlands who brings together compelling music with strong lyrics, storytelling and surprising improvisations. Playful and light-footed elements alternate with intense and vivacious grooves and harmonies. Rooted in jazz, Kraaijeveld is always looking to find connections between different styles of music, connections between musicians and between people, through layered but accessible music.

Established in 2016, NewSound is a modern jazz ensemble based in Malaysia that is taking the local music scene by storm. The band name says it all, as their mission is to push the boundaries and limitations of jazz compositions by constantly releasing and performing new and original material. Their sound is greatly influenced by modern jazz music with a touch of fusion, Latin, and not forgetting the good ol’ roots of straight ahead swing.
