Beat Goes Bach is a project by Mei Lin Hii to explore the possibilities of mashing up classical Bach music with drums and percussions. Beat Goes Bach reimagines the possibilities when two accomplished musicians get together to start a ‘band’ – allowing the music of Johann Sebastian Bach to come alive in a different way.
Classical pianist Mei Lin Hii holds a Master of Music Degree and Professional Studies Diploma from the Manhattan School of Music in New York. There she studied with renowned teacher Zenon Fishbein. Prior to that, she was a student of Michael Ruiz at the American Conservatory of Music , Chicago. Mei Lin has performed in piano masterclass with world-renowned pianist-teachers such as Leon Fleisher, Byron Janis, Nina Svetlanova and the late Shura Cherkassky.
As the winner of the 1995 Artists International Competition in New York, Mei Lin made her New York debut recital at Weill Hall in Carnegie Hall to a dazzled audience.
Percussionist Steve Thornton is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Before moving to Malaysia in 1997, Thornton lived and worked in New York. In the course of his formidable recording career he has worked and recorded with saxophonist Sadao Watanbe, and continues this gig today. Thornton has also worked with and appeared on albums by Herbie Hancock, Mongo Santamaria, jazz legend Miles Davis, and pianist McCoy Tyner, as well as Tracy Chapman, Mariah Carey, and Michael Jackson. His playing is particularly well displayed on albums by jazz vocalist Tania Maria and by romantic crooner Jon Lucien. Most recently, Thornton released an album under his own name (“Nature’s Plan”), and appeared on a CD with Keiko Lee, a jazz vocalist popular in Japan.
