Acts in the Malaysian urban music scene do not get any fresher than NYK. This 25-year-old is eager and raring for music lovers everywhere to enjoy his expressive style of R&B and pop.
NYK’s childhood music lessons never lasted long enough, but when he found his father’s old guitar, he decided that he’d teach himself how to play the old-school rock ‘n’ roll music he had grown up with.
As a teenager, NYK expanded his musical exploration into R&B and pop. Discovering music by Justin Timberlake was musically defining for him – the genre helped him find his distinct sound. Delving deeper into R&B and pop, NYK looked to artists like Frank Ocean, Childish Gambino and Mura Masa for further inspiration. The stylistic influences of these artists can be heard in NYK’s crisp, soulful sound.
NYK started posting YouTube videos of him and a friend covering some of their favourite songs. This then turned into performances for friends and family, which then grew into small paid gigs. As word got around, NYK went on to perform at corporate events, and soon enough, was billed to open for Singaporean pop act, The Sam Willows. A year into performing publicly, NYK caught the eye of Sony Music Malaysia who signed him to a recording deal.
He released his first self-written single, “FWB” (an acronym for ‘Friends with Benefits’) in August 2017, which has gained more than one million streams to date. NYK’s follow up single “Make It On Me” is scheduled for released on 9th March 2018, and his debut EP is in the pipeline for later this year.
