WHEN four fellas came together in the late 1990s to form a band that aspired to play rock music with a twist, it was a case of being at the wrong place and the wrong time … and even playing the wrong music.

But staring adversity in the face was a struggle the band was prepared to take, and when weeks turned into months, and then years, Samarkand finally had a six-song CD in hand, Spinning In Infinity.

It was progressive rock straight out of the 1970s, and decidedly British in flavour. Smatterings of Yes, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull and Wishbone Ash, among others, is no slight to those bands, but a reflection of Samarkand’s musical soul.

And now, two decades on, the band is dusting off the cobwebs, shaking off the rust and readying a series of comeback shows to observe its 20th anniversary and honour some unfinished business.

So, lock up your daughters (or grandmothers) when the band hits Gaslight Studios come Aug 25. It might not be pretty, but it will be interesting. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, after all.
