A GIANT in the Malaysian music industry, Salvador Guerzo was a saxophonist and a prolific arranger.
Dubbed the "Stan Getz of the East" by his peers, "Ador" to his friends and family, was a 70-year old tenor saxophone colossus, even if he didn't appear or was heard as one to the masses. Born in Manila, Phillipines, Ador grew up in a musical family, with his father being a Professor of Music, preacher and Mayor of his hometown Balungao, Pagasinan. His tenure as a bandleader, arranger and musician started at the age of 14 when he played clarinet for brass bands in Manila. His musical journey took him throughout
South East Asia.
In the 60s, Guerzo landed a month long dream gig in Bangkok, as a sideman for jazz great, the late Stan Getz. While in Bangkok, Guerzo met and married pianist/singer Francisca Soliano, daughter of Malaysian music icon, Alfonso Soliano. Subsequently, Guerzo moved to Malaysia with the Solianos and remained here till his death in January 2012. Guerzo was noted for his travels to the North Sea Jazz Festival, the ASEAN Symphonic Workshop, and was arranger and instructor for the Petronas Performing Arts Group Orchestra, a post he held until his retirement in 2011. This tribute will feature some of Guerzo's musical arrangements and favourite songs, interpreted by Julian Chan on saxophones, his children Rachel Guerzo on piano/vocals, Don Guerzo on double bass and brother in-law Rizal Soliano on drums.
