Live sounds around the Klang Valley for our entry into March. From live music of all kinds from jazz, classical, indie and rock to theatre and comedy, here’s a look at the week ahead in Kuala Lumpur.
MARCH 2/3: David Helbock Trio at No Black Tie
Two rewards and the audience prize at the world biggest jazz-piano-solo competition of the Jazzfestival Montreux, a lot of enthusiastic/international reviews for his CDs and the most important prize in Austria 2011 – the “Outstanding Artist Award” – David Helbock, the piano player coming from a small little village in Austria called Koblach, has already had a great international musical career.
Helbock is not only a great pianist, he is also a very individual thinker, who is investing not only a lot of dexterity but also quite an amount of brain activity to his projects.
David Helbock, born on the 28th January 1984, began playing the piano at the age of six. David Helbock played tours and made recordings with different projects in countries like the USA, Australia, Mexico, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Mongolia, Korea, Philippines, South Africa, Ethiopia, Kenia, Senegal, Morocco, Iran, Tunisia, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and all over Europe. Since the start of his musical career David Helbock is also very active as a composer. One of his works is among others a big „One-Year compositional project“ where he wrote a new piece every day for a whole year. In April 2010 his “Personal Realbook” with over 600 pages of music was released.

Before she became a comic she was a burlesque dancer and choreographer in San Francisco. She has published numerous romantic novels under the pseudonymn Tara Sundrive. It's not what you might expect from a 45-year-old 'self-proclaimed housewife' wearing a flowery tea-dress, but that is exactly the point. Watch her break and shatter society's standard mould with jabs and gabs!
Mary describes her comedian husband Simon as "a coconut – he is half Jamaican, half English" – and lately he's discovered that brown is the new black – as he explores his mixed heritage in this funny and thought-provoking show. Simon has made many television appearances, including The Punt And Dennis Show, Jo Brand: Through The Cakehole, Harry Hill's Fruit Fancies, For Amusement Only and Is It Bill Bailey? Simon has been a stand up comic since the summer of 1995. He has performed nationwide as well as multiple cities across Europe and Asia.
